Name: Bobby Brake
Rank/Rate: ATR-3
Division/Squadron: VA-86
Years Aboard: 1970
Location: Birmingham AL USA
Comments: I served aboard the Coral Sea in 1970 with Attack Squadron VA-86. I’ll never forget my first day aboard the carrier. The Coral Sea was already on Yankee Station when I reported to my squadron. I was walking across the hangar deck when the aft starboard elevator broke loose and fell into the drink! SCARED the wits out of me because I was right beside thing when it broke! I thought we had been hit with a torpedo or something. The best part was that we had to pull off station and go to Yokosuka Japan for 2 weeks. I arrived in Sept. or Oct. ’70 and that’s when the elevator broke.

I got my shellback card on that cruise. I even got to swim across the equator, and we had a great time in Austrailia.

Hope you are having a good Veteran’s Day and I would like to thank you for serving our country.

Perth Australia was great! Even though liberty there was delayed by the Mayaguez Rescue. I had a lot of fun in Olongapo City. I tried, but couldn't visit every bar there. Mornings after a night of Olongapo City were pretty tough. One of my most vivid memories is when we were steaming through 60 foot seas in the Indian Ocean (I think) on our way to the Mayaguez Rescue. Waves were washing over the flight deck. For a carrier, that was a pretty rough ride. take care, Richard

What an experience. The collision of the Equadorian tanker, the switchboard fire during ORE's, the loss of one of our F/A 18's on the flight deck, Tomato flavored ice cream, Christmas Eve mass with the Pope in Rome..I could go on and on.. The best years of my life. Really sad to have seen her torn apart here in the Baltimore harbor. She went down fighting though. Many big fires. My tour as EWO during 1984-1986 is something I'll never forget. The camaraderie between the air wing folks and ship's company was something to remember. I'm sure that other carrier crewmen feel the same about their carriers, but Coral Sea duty was something special to me. I was last aboard her in 69-72 time frame, flying mail out to the crew as they returned from WestPac. At that time, I was in VR-30 as a COD crewman. Great times.......both back then and in the Med.

I am trying to locate former Navy pilot,Lt. Earl Lewis,jr, who was originally from Virginia. I was told he retired as a Commander and is currently somewhere in California.I understand that he flew off of the Coral Sea and was subsequantly captured on 10/24/1967.During that time an organization distributed bracelets of POW/MIAs which were to be given to that person upon returning home.I recently found his bracelet that my husband, who served in the Marines during Viet Nam, had purchased. It would be an honor and a privilege to present it to former Lt Lewis or his family along with a long overdue" Welcome Home"! Thanks for any help.

Planning to go back some time this summer and see the Engineering spaces. Well take care all. Brian

It's been a while so thought I would update. I was a plane captain with the VF-11 Red Rippers. Foe those who may remember, we had the silver banshees. Would love to hear from any shipmates from that era. She was a good one. Hated to see her go. When they were stripping her, I stopped by on a trip down the east coast and watched for a bit from a civilian ship across the river. It was not a good experience. My best to all the souls that ever manned her decks.

Checking in again about a year since last time. I saw Larry Darveaux signed in, too. Still have not heard from others on the Coral Sea when I was there. Some great times: Hong Kong at Christmastime; Yokosuka in the snow, having a shaft and all four screws replaced; Tokyo; landing in Vietnam to refuel on the ship's V6 plane; Subic and my sweet little gals there; San Francisco and the bay area; the Supremes all wasted after doing three shows before coming aboard at Yokosuka; Many more. I hope you all have just as fond memories. Larry "Pinky" Pilkinton, ATN3

Great web site! I was happy to see all of the dates of significant events. Does anyone remember a maneuver called "pinwheeling?" All jets were on the flight deck, engines roaring, with their tails outboard. Their combined power alone is what powered us into port. It was a Japanese port--maybe Yokosuka--in 1962.

I was an RD2 when I was aboard the Coral Sea. I left in order to attend schools and got out as an EW1. I was on several ships, but the Coral Sea was the best. I remember spending Christmas in the Tonkin Gulf, and we hung stockings on the wall of the PM shop. One of the guys got up in the middle of the night and filled them. It was neat.

Was a visitor to the Coral Sea as part of a trip set up by the US consulate when she was at Hong Kong during 1962 or 63. I've still got some of the pictures I took. During the same week or so we also had a school trip to visit the HMS Ark Royal - at Hong Kong at the same time. Coral Sea was much more impressive. It was a Brit school and we Americans were very proud of the Coral Sea.

We were steaming back from WestPac to Alameda. General quarters sounded in the middle of the night. After we had been at battle stations, the Captain came on and told the crew that President Kennedy had been shot. Al lot of us thought for sure we were going to war and not get to Alameda. I think we ran aground not too far from the pier in San Francisco Bay at Alameda On the day Kennedy was buried. Can't recall the Captain's name, but he was relieved of command shortly thereafter.

WestPac 79-80" 102 continous days at sea, remember that one? It was a record that didnt stand long. I boarded about 70 days into that float after 4 weeks in transit starting from San Diego ending up in Diego Garcia hitching a ride on the Kilauea to the Coral Sea and the I.O. oh the joy! Captain Dunleavy was the CO and a good one who later was retired a Vice Admiral. WestPac 81-82" was shaping up to be another long one until Reagan got elected and the Iran hostages were set free. All hands were issued 2 hot beers per each, those who did'nt drink sold them off for upwards of 20 dollars a can or more??? and we set a course and steamed for the P.I.

WestPac 79-80" 102 continous days at sea, remember that one? It was a record that didnt stand long. I boarded about 70 days into that float after 4 weeks in transit starting from San Diego ending up in Diego Garcia hitching a ride on the Kilauea to the Coral Sea and the I.O. oh the joy! Captain Dunleavy was the CO and a good one who retired a Vice Admiral. WestPac 81-82" was shaping up to be a long one until Reagan got elected and the Iran hostages were set free, all hands were issued 2 hot beers per each and we set course for the P.I.

One more time down memory lane, tho the IKE CVN69 was my 1st ship when I got my orders to the CORAMARU in 84 out of Chase Field, I was totally dissappointed, especially when I got to the Portsmouth drydock to check in and saw that rusty nasty dusty smelly ol' bucket o rust I was like Holy S..., what did my detailer just do to me, but when I was checking out to go to Iceland after the ship, I almost couldnt leave, that Ol Girl just grew on me, I had a the best time, and the best evals I ever had not to mention some of the most memorable experiences I would ever live thru, I still miss that ship, and sometimes wish that I had taken lots more pictures than I did, but life goes on. Wish everyone a good year and encourage all to continue making history for the AGELESS WARRIOR and bring honor to her and her crew thru her service life

Web cruising and found your site. Found a few shipmates from the time I was aboard. ABCS John Dills and AZCM Danny Whitehead plus Chaplain Halley. My nickname while in Ships Maint. was "Ed Norton". That's because the XO, Capt Denny McGinn put me in charge of the ships sewage system. Yep, thats right, an airdale in charge. Must have been what they needed because soon after I took over all the heads worked and I had the best ever division. They were all special in my wheel book. Retired now, living on the family farm where I grew up. I preach once in awhile and drive/maintain school busses. Will soon retire from that, then spend time at the pier watching my grand kids grow into fine young Americans. Ya'll write now and God Bless. Al Murray
