I just wanted to let all the members off the Coral Sea Association know that Ed Lontz BM2 2nd Div. USS CORAL SEA has passed away. I knew Ed for only a short time in fact I met him at the Williamsburg reunion, even tho he only lived a few miles from my home town. He loved the association and attending the reunions. He and I went to the same barber shop, very nice man!

I was a second class avaition ordnance petty officer in the the airlaunched missile shop and G-division. I arrived 4 days before we were to leave san Francisco for the 1974/75 WestPac. The Coral Sea was in port Alameda siting next to the Enterprise. I remember it was raining, and my new wife looked out the window of the car and stated that it was a beautiful ship. I said, "honey your looking in the wrong direction, the Coral Sea is over there". Sure enough, there were a group of women with banner saying "This ship should condemned". Well we sailed 4 days later.

I saw a very interesting show on the History Channel 12/19/05 about the USS Midway (CV-41). It had alot of film from the very early days in straight deck configuration all the way to decommissioning and the creation of the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum. Lots of flight ops footage, which is always fun for us airdales. This was a special presentation by the History Channel, so maybe one of these days there will be one about the Coral Sea, we HOPE!!!

Time to up dated info. Just sold farm and have moved to Oklahoma on Lake Eufaula. Have been fishing and active in local politics. Except for "air-dales" I've never seen very many from ships comp. sign in. It was a good place to serve your country and I'm verry prode of it. I sure wish I could spend a few days on the USS RAGAN, but it'll never happen you can't turn the clock back.

Good Morning, I served on the Coral Sea from 1975-1977 and went on west pac in 1977, I joined the Mar Det after she came out of drydock in Long Beach, CA. Our Commanding Officer was Capt Frick, and my Detachment commander was Marine Capt Clemmer. I am trying to locate an old cruisebook from the west pac I went on. Also if anyone knows where a good friend of mine is, his name is Lon Dirkson, he worked on the signal bridge, also a Petty Officer named Monty( montedeosca) he worked in the ships technical library next to the Brig. I've been floundering around the site trying to figure out how to join. But in doing so I found a couple things that trouble me. In "Ships Divisions" you overlook the OI Division that ran CIC. And, the AVGAS kid that go killed on the 68 Wespac cruise was not chasing his hat, he was pulling a hose. I watched it happen. We also lost a piiot that failed to make the flight deck and crashed. No one mentioned that.

Just a quick hello to see if anybody is still kicking that served when I was aboard 78-82(Seems like a 100 yrs ago, looking back). I lost touch with all the buddies that I served with. AE's & AT's to include Joe Baker, Tom Hutchison, Tom Tarkington, Brian Arend, Tom Hicks, Bob Dixon, Mark Hong, Skid Rowe, Tom Lorek, Darnell Hubbard, Haigler, Cooper & more-----any of you guys out there & still breathing? Comments: Great Ship. When I was on it, I wished it was over, now that it's over, I wish I was on it. I was a Blue Shirt on the Flight Deck. Got on in Subic. Thought of a while I wasn't going to make it. On the end of mine and two other's Orders was (SGN) and they forced the 3 of us on a flight out of the Philipines to Cholon, VietNam. It took them a week to figured out their mistake. When I tried to explain to the Marine at the desk that we were suppose to catch the Coral Sea in Subic, his reply was, GET ON THAT PLANE OR I'LL SHOOT YA. Interesting guy that Marine. Probably just following orders. But it gave us a weeks vacation in Nam. Google: The district of Cholon in Ho Chi Minh is Saigon's China town. Anyone ever hear of Kenneth Platte. Went to the USS Coral Sea Annual Reunion in Jacksonville, Fl. this past weekend and as usual had a great time! Saw Mike (Oscar) Pfeffer, Al (Wacky Racer) Ross and Paul (Chief) Bernardy from my era. Also saw new shipmate friends from 1947 to early 1970's (Bob, Herman, Sal, Jim, Rom, Ed, David, Pat, John, Clarence, Orville, and many others) whom I've come to know over the last three years. One thing really bothers me though and that was the Guest Speaker after dinner Saturday night. I feel the kid from Sudan was very inappropriate! We have enough problems of our own here in the United States. I personally don't need any Bleeding Heart Liberals pushing the rest of the worlds problems on me! The best years of my life were spent on board Coral Sea, in Pri-Fly and on deck as a blue-shirt and later a yellow-shirt. I came aboard as a DM-3 and left the ship 3 years later as an ABH-3. I considered that great progress! :) Many night ops, many cat spots, a visit to Sydney Australia, Bob Hopes Seafarer Days in Bremerton, losing the elevator in the South China Sea, 18 sorties a day, running aground in the Alameda Channel, going up to the radio shack to call Dallas for more info when President Kennedy was assinated...Lot's of memories. Hadn't signed in for a while and just wanted to say Hi to all my fellow roof rats. I've been out for 23 years now and was happy to be out then, but it seems I miss the flight deck more every day now. There was nothing like it in the world. If I had it to do again, I would have stayed in. On the Coral Sea Tribute site there is a great collection of pictures of the scrapping of our ship, it brings a tear to my eye and a lump in my throat every time I see them. I was with DoD Police. I was in the police crusier, it was 12am, I was playing my gameboy, all of a sudden I heard bells and ringing & people talking, no one belived me. A few weeks later I got the same watch with a partner and I said Lets go to the Coral Sea and sit. Sure enough you heard bells and people walking up the gang plank! He was so scared and he was the real cop! They say on a foggy night you can see people walking around on the Flight Deck! Well, I'm a believer! I sure hope P Rico came up with the money to turn her into a museum and that she didn't go for razor blades! They wanted $5 mill for her. They sank the USS America for a natural reef. It too should of been made a museum and not a place for fish to play in!

I remember the swells coming over the bow of the ship during bad weather and watching the destroyer following us disappear from sight and reappear from the waves. Lot of good memories of friends in V-2 division. I remember celebrating our 50,000th shot from Cat 1. Great cake. Anyone remember when Bob Hope was supposed to come aboard but was diverted to another place due to the mining of Haiphong Harbor? That was a big disappointment. Have been attempting to find and had been unsuccessful, others of my division until I found this site. Great job on the web site. I already found one person I knew.

I always was proud to have served on the Coral Sea, We Evac'd Vietnam / Recovered the Mayaguez in May of '75, I will never forget the Helicopter on the flight deck streaming blood and fuel. That story is still coming out 30 years later. I never knew we left 3 guys back on that island...NOT GOOD. When I heard that the Coral Sea had been scrapped, it really hurt. I was embarked in CVA 43 in 1967 with CAG 15 and shot down 11-19-67. Lot's of erroneous background re: my shootdown. Went on google and found that info regarding my incident is mainly false. Picture posted of me is not me and I have know idea who it is. Lead a/c (Clower) was first a/c shot down not mine. Don't know where narrative originated but it is not accurate. Arrived on the deck in '73 in a mail COD --- on the “line” off the coast of ‘Nam --- it's a rush to catch the wire --- it's a bigger rush missing it the first time around. The next day's COD missed the landing wires and hit the island. Worked in OE Div --- radars and related equip. During one of the WestPacs cruises someone played with the piping from the JP-5 fuel tanks and the fresh water tanks which allowed the two systems to mix and the crew was treated to jet fuel in the drinking water (that included the showers) --- the Skipper and Medical Officer took a few minutes of their schedule on the closed circuit TV and told us the drinking water was better for us than drinking a coke --- all I know is it didn't taste better --- and soap was not much good in the showers. Nevertheless --- I wouldn't trade my days on the Lady --- she didn't play submarine and I appreciated that. We had an unhappy sailor throw a wrench into the gears and we spent ~ 10-days along Alava pier in Subic while 15' x 15' sections of the hangar deck and about 5 more decks were removed for the repair. Other than that --- Coral Sea didn't miss a mission --- and we found time in '75 to visit Perth Australia.

I was the messdeck yeoman for 6 months during drydock in S.F. As soon as we left I went back to my division, V-4 (Purple-shirt.fuels) Got a great picture of Walter Cronkite, taken by the Captain of "me and Walter". Dropped in at the NAS Alameda & USS Hornet a few weeks ago. Lots of memories. Used to sing in P.I.at the clubs; and even "won" the ship's talent show upon return to CONUS from "11-months in Yankee Station". Live 45 minutes from SF/Alameda and hometown is Richmond, so still close to everything. Pretty much hated early part of duty on the 'ol Maru, but loved it after we left for "over there". Sure wish it was the Coral Sea I was touring instead of the Hornet, but it's got a proud history also. May your seas be calm..and your liberty long.

My father, Bradford C. Behrman Jr, of South Belmar, N.J. served aboard the USS Coral Sea from 1953-1955, and is, was, a member of this association. It is with heart felt and deep regret that I must inform you of his death. Dad died on March 29, 2005. I would love to hear from anyone who knew him, or served with him. PJ PS. To this day and due to circumstances seemingly beyond our control we (his children) are still fighting to honor him and lay his ashes to rest.

Twenty years ago today I stepped off the afterbrow of the Coral Sea and said goodbye to Navy Life. How quickly those twenty years have flown by. As I look back at my time aboard Coral Sea I am amazed at all the memories that come flooding back. I miss the old girl and all the shipmates that I met while aboard. I remember names like Duce, Ronnie D., Dread, Shrub, Hoff, Nick, Skip, Maze,Floyd,and many others. I remember armory duty, unreps, magazine watch, CIWS firings, manning the 50 cal. on new years eve of 1985 in Naples, and so many other memories that make me smile. It's amazing how many of the things I learned during that time that I still use today. I grew up on that ship and it saddens me to know she is gone. I guess as long as I have memories, and dreams, and thoughts of her she will never really be gone. God Bless all the men who served aboard her. Bravo Zulu to all.

I just wanted to say that we,the snipes in B-1 Div.and other engineering depts worked under some very tedious and trying circumstances but,we always,and I do mean always worked well together as a team.One memory that I will never forget is when 1-C FIREROOM was flooded.I was the messenger on that particular watch and I remember that I had just finished taking oil samples and readings when someone on the watchteam yelled something to the effect''WE HAVE FLOODING ,FLOODING FLOODING!I was the first man out and ,if I remember correctly,our team leader at the time BT1 DONALD HEADLEY was waist deep in water.I mean that water came up to the hatch/stairwell.The good news is -no casualties

Cdr. Clarence William “Billy” Stoddard was remembered in a ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia on 26 May, 2005. On 14 Sept 1966, on a mission in Vietnam, Cdr. William "Billy" Stoddard's Skyraider was hit by a SAM. He got as far as the Gulf of Tonkin before his plane went down. Cdr. Stoddard was listed as MIA until 1973, when his status was changed to Killed in Action. The Marine Band from Albany, GA, Color and Honor Guards from NAS Marietta, and a special Navy flyover highlighted the occasion. Admiral James Ellis, USN (Ret) led the Memorial Service to honor all who served and those who gave all. A native of Atlanta, Commander Billy Stoddard servedSkyraider was hit by a SAM. My wife and I were recently in San Diego, CA., and while there we toured the USS Midway, which is now a memorial/museum in that city. During our tour of this beautiful ship, I couldn't help but feel the pains Coral Sea sailors experienced as their once proud ship was relegated to scrap, and I can only reflect on how wonderful it would have been to have Coral Sea preserved like her sister ship. As a former carrier sailor myself, having served on the USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14) during the Vietnam War, and having witnessed the dismantling of this once gallant ship in San Diego in 1973, I can attest to how sad it is to see something so beautiful disemboweled into nothing. If there is any consolation to you Coral Sea sailors let it be this, the Midway is in strong, capable hands, and they are doing a wonderful job of preserving her, and her presence in San Diego is a testimony to the greatness of all carrier sailors. The Coral Sea may be gone, but she will be remembered in the visible presence of the Midway. That's not such a bad deal.

I was married to a sailor stationed on the Coral Sea during the year they made their round the world trip from San Diego to Portsmouth. She was a grand ship. My name then was Catherine Harris. I wrote the poem that came in second place in the poetry contest. Capt. Taylor entered it for me after I sent him a copy. If anybody has a copy of that poem, I would sure like to have it. I can't find mine. God bless all our service members, past and present. I served my country by being a Navy wife, and was proud to do so. A friend of mine and I now travel to various sites in the state of Washington with his military museum. He was in the Coast Guard in the 60's, but we honor all branches. It is our small way of honoring our military men and women. We have made friends with the gambit from privates to admirals, met one of the band of brothers from the 101st, have met some of our Medal of Honor recipients (John D. (Bud) Hawk lives in Bremerton, WA, and is a close friend), and many others who are all heroes in my book. Thanks for the beautiful web site. I found it looking for information on LCDR Wendell Alcorn, whose POW bracelet I wore back in the early 70's, and I stumbled upon this site. The husband I referred to earlier was stationed on the Enterprise during Nam. Strange coincidence. LCDR Alcorn was a member of Air Group 9 on the Enterprise when he was shot down in 1965. Just thought all you old Flat Top Sailors might like to know that at approx. 11:30 am Saturday May 14 USS America CVA-66 was sunk in a live fire exercise, 600 miles off the Virginia coast in 6,000 feet of water, for combat damage assessment. This information will be used to improve the survivability of the next generation carriers. Any further info is at www.ussamerica.org. There is also a link about the campaign to petition the President/Congress/Dept of the Navy to name the 1st of the new class carriers USS America hence the rest would be "America Class Carriers" Works for me-Maybe the 2nd one can be USS Coral Sea!! Check out the web site there's some nice pictures of America being towed out of Philadelphia on April 19th

Does anyone know if "America" left Philadelphia on Tuesday April 19th as scheduled? I have searched the Philly newspaper web sites & found nothing. Ordered to PreCom in San Diego. Rode the MSTS Barret from SanDiego to Bremerton. Remember almost sinking the Iwo while it was still in dry dock, the visit to Vancover and Greyhound loads of crew returning there until we left for SanFrancisco. Still have newspaper of largest ship going under Lions Gate bridge and visit coverage. Was part of evolution in removing TACAN to fit under bridge. This was the start of my Navy career and as fate would have it I retired in 79 off her sistership, USS Midway CVA41 at Yokosuka.

I'm not one given to lots of emotion, but looking at the pictures of Coral Sea being scrapped I did feel my eyes stinging a bit. Maybe everything wasn't utopian (and to be honest an overzealous squadron CO is the main reason I didn't stay in for 20 or 30 years), but she was still a fine old tub and definitely deserved better than to be turned into scrap metal. Oh, well, Coral Sea is scrapped, Forrestal and Midway are museums, and I'm getting old and nostalgic.

Just comparing sea stories with my son (I started late), who is a new Ensign in the navy. 30 plus years later I guess the stories are still about the same. Except he has no Subic Bay PI to talk about. I hope his memories stay as fresh with him, as mine have with me. What a hell of a education that was second to none. I was aboard in July of 1972. I was there when the Coral Sea was replaced by the USS America, deployed to the Gulf of Tonkin. I sailed from Japan to California as a TAD assignment. I was a "spook" trained in the Russian language. The transit from Japan to Calif. was a very nice experience! Even though my stay was short,, I feel as though I was one of the regulars. Would enjoy hearing from any one that made that voyage.

Does anyone remember the ships newsletter called "The Pegasus" that was printed sometimes between the 67 & 70 cruises? I am interested in one that had an article about crew members of the Coral Sea being used as extra's in the movie "Too Late the Hero" with Cliff Roberson and Michael Caine, that was being filmed during one of our port periods at Subic, I think that it was during the 1968-1969 cruise. I haven't checked in for a few years. My wife and I traded the winters of New England for the Valley Of The Sun here in Arizona in 2002. We miss "Good Italian and New England Sea Food." Not the realatives. I work at the VA Hospital here in Phoenix in mental health. (not as a patient) I often think back on our times together on Cat #3. JBD, Waterbreak operator, Hook-up crew member...watching a sunset, or sunrise with a Kool and a cup of coffee....pulling into Hong Kong in the rain...the smells, and the sounds of Japan, Singapore, and of course walking across the bridge over S--- River in the Phillipines. All the memories aren't great, there were some bumps in the road with certain people and things. However, here today, now at this time in my life, I would pay any amount to go on one last cruise, on Our Ship, with you guys. One more sunrise, one more sunset. Funny how things go full circle..... Smooth seas and inner peace to you all.

Several incidents stick out in my mind, the injured marines who came back from the Mayaguez rescue, the forlorned look on the faces of those 1000's of refuges we brought on board during the evac period in 75, that soldier who stepped off of a prop transport flight and turned only to walk into the spinning props of the plane meeting his untimely death and then the look of total surprise on the face of that Airdale just before he was blown overboard to his death by the exhaust of an A7 Corsair. I remember standing and watching as he drifted out of sight over the horizon while who ever it was at the helm seemed to take forever getting the ship swung around and then the Angel crews taking so long getting a chopper off the deck to the rescue. Of course by the time he was picked up he had already met his fate and was sent home the hard way, horizontal. CYA - Better keep your head out of your ass sailor. I live in Louisiana now but put Dayton Ohio because that's where I lived when I signed up. Afees station was Cincinnati. Boot camp was Great Lakes. A School Lakehurst New Jersey.

I served aboard the Coral Sea 74-77 in #1 Engine, pump, generator and shaft alleys. I spent many a long watch in those superheated spaces. Some cruises six on and six off keeping the screw turning. All you snipes know what I'm talking about. What a cast a characters I was privileged to work with, from everywhere around the USA and even differant parts of the world. That's what made my experience. The moment us boots arrived on board ship in 74 and were challanged to a friendly game of tackle football against the salts ( the boots did lose that day due to some arcade salt rule that awarded them one extra point, but we did earn some respect from the salts )to the day I arrived at my day and a wakeup the Navy wasn't just a job it was an experience mostly due to the people I met and worked with. A shout out to all you BT's, you are a bunch of crazy MF, how you worked in those boiler rooms, pour another round to you guys. A sad note. Rev. Richard J. Holmes passed away this morning, Jan 4, 2004, at age 87 in Allendale, NJ. Father Holmes (later elevated to Monsignor)served as Roman Catholic chaplain on the Coral Sea in the 1950s (not sure of exact dates). Msgr. Holmes had been chaplain to Bergen County (NJ)institutions and pastor of St. Catharine's church in Glen Rock, NJ. For the last several years, he lived in retirement. My father (Captain,USNR) and I have known Msgr. Holmes since he served as Catholic Chaplain at Quonset Point (RI) NAS in the early 1950s. Funeral and burial will be at St. Luke's RC Church in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ (times to be determined)

We are all aware that there is two great Coral Sea site, yours being one of them. The fact is , I seldom read your discussion board anymore due to the spam. The other site had no problem clearing up the problem so I find it hard to believe that you can't, or is that you choose not to do it? You have the better site due to it has more to offer, but you may discover that may ship members like myself will stop logging on, if all they find once they do log on, is sharks trying to use your web server to sell their wares. OPTION TO CONVERT AWARD OF ARMED FORCES EXPEDITIONARY MEDAL AWARDED FOR OPERATION FREQUENT WIND TO VIETNAM SERVICE MEDAL. (a) IN GENERAL- The Secretary of the military department concerned shall, upon the application of an individual who is an eligible Vietnam evacuation veteran, award that individual the Vietnam Service Medal, notwithstanding any otherwise applicable requirements for the award of that medal. Any such award shall be made in lieu of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal awarded the individual for participation in Operation Frequent Wind.
