Comments: Anybody: My son just bought me a medal pin in the shape and color of the American Flag. The pin is attached to my USS Coral Sea cap. The person selling them in Dallas, Texas stated the medal for the pin is from the USS Coral when it was scraped in 1994. Is this true or a scam? Bruce |

Comments: Happy Holidays to you all. I love hearing from old shipmates and check the guest book occasionally. My three years on board the Coral Sea shaped my life in ways I am still discovering. As Charles Dickens wrote, " It was the best of times. It was the worst of times." Even now, forty years on, I occasionally dream of being back on board with my friends. We were wild, young, sometimes crazy, sometimes honorable men. If you e-mail me put CVA43 in the subject line. I'll respond.
Peace to us all. |

I just learned that Captain Ferris passed away from this web site and I have to go for now but will contact his son as soon as possible to give my regards! I am still looking for Paul, the captain's navigator and Jim S., a navy seal who was with me when I was a naval photographer during Counter-TET Offensive Phase IV Vietnam. Comments: CVA 42 was scrapped. The confusion comes from looking at the Carrier in San Francisco with Google Earth. A plane on the deck makes the ships number look like 42. I guess they can't keep them all. Too bad as I sure would have liked to show my grand kids the Coral Sea. |

Comments: Hey, shipmates, just checking the site again. Great to see the postings from all who served, the stories from everyone from the 50's through the 80's; it's apparent that anyone who served on the Coral Sea still has this great ship in their blood. If it's true what someone wrote that the Roosevelt is in San Fran, and not 'San Francisco's Own, well, there's something wrong with that (it sure would be nice to have my family go to visit her....ah well, no sense thinking of woulda/shoulda be...). Thanks to all who share their memories - the Coral Sea lives in our hearts. And Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones! |

Comments: i am sister of thomas wheeler who served aboard the Coral Sea from approximately 1972 until 1976. I am very proud of my brother's service to the country, and would like to extend my gratitude to you for maintaining this site. You can be certain I will be bookmarking it to show my brother. It would be interesting if you could include some of the history of the Coral Sea's involvement in the evacuation of Saigon, i am well aware of the lasting impression that it left on some of the personnel. |

Comments: I believe most shipmates on the 1960-1961 WestPac cruise need their DD214 up-dated to a DD215 like I had mine 45 yrs latter, when it was up-dated I found three medals which included the Expeditionary ArmForces Vietnam, National Defense,& Good Conduct. Please contact me and I will help you as I am now doing for three shipmates. My mission in life is helping all veterans get their benefits! |

Comments: I am wondering if you know my dad, Raymond Weitbrecht he was aboard in 67-68. He has recently shared a "yearbook" with me and he was talking about some of his buddies and some funny stories. My dad has been recently diagnoised with bile duct cancer and it is terminal. I am trying to just get some stories or pictures of him and his life on and off the ship. I thought that he would love to see some pictures from other sailors or maybe a funny story to make him laugh. He is a great guy and he loves to take about his memories on the USS Coral Sea. Email me if you can help me!! Thank You!!! |

Comments: Nice to see that so many of my shipmates still have the ability and memory to sign in. Truly a great feeling. I am planing a trip back to the PI on business, my last trip in 35 years. Wonder if I will recognize anything (surly some family resemblance) This time 1st class flying instead of riding in the back of the bus with the other 3500 no perk cruise liners? I assure you I will have a cold San Miguel to the old girl and to all that sailed her. God Bless and Calm Sea's. |

Comments: Very good years on the Coral Sea, wish she was still around. After boot camp spent all my enlistment on board. Last year was in charge of electronic storeroom for ship company located just under angle flight deck. Now retired on Lake Eufaula but working more now then before making a game called Jokers and Pegs. Ship nationwide. Wife of 48 years writes books but isn't famous yet. Would love to spend a week on the USS Ragan but that'll never happen. |

Comments: I was a right seat person in the spad, VAW-13. VAW-13 shared the ready room with our sister squadron, "straight spad". I'm sorry but I don't remember that squadron designation. However, we lost one of the straight spad pilots as he was returning from the Phillipines back to the Coral Sea. He was shot down near Hainan Island by the Chinese. He did parachute from his cockpit and landed on the island of Hainan. Bob Stoddart was his VAW-13 wingman and observed the attack. Stoddart was busy in evading the MIG and didn't get an absolute fix on what was happening to this person. We heard his beeper for several days but I don't know if he was ever found alive.
If anyone knows of this incident and knows his name please update me. Thank you. |

This was certainly one of the high lights of my life. I was able to meet alot of great guys ( at that time women were not going to sea )and make some great memories. If there is anyone out there who remembes me ( I must admit there was not much about me to remember ) I would certainly like to hear from you. |

Comments: I'm trying to locate a black man who probably were on the ship 20 years ago in late september 1989. We met in Majorca at the Bananas disco, you were there with another "sailor" who were a white man with dark hair. Unfortunately I have completely forgot your names. We were standing in the bar and our conversation was fun. I was amazed by all the rings you had on every finger and I also said to you that I never date a sailor, and you were laughing. After a while the MP:s came in and I asked who are they. And you explaned what there job was and I made a joke "it's like your mother is watching you". If you recognize this or your friend or someone who knew a black man with a lot of rings on his fingers and my guess is that you are around 42-45 today, please contact me. |

Many veterans encountered problems when trying to prove that their difficult-to-diagnose or undiagnosed illnesses were connected to military service. This affected these veterans’ access to disability compensation.
http://www.veteranprograms.com/id194.html
In response, VA asked Congress for the authority to provide compensation benefits to veterans who are chronically disabled by undiagnosed illnesses.

Comments: Would like to hear from anyone who was on the 66-67 WestPac Cruise.....
I was in S3 Division, fresh out of BootCamp. Joined the ship in Yokuska. Remember those long days on the Line in Yankee Station, the wild nights in Subic, Honk Kong for Christmas, and a brotherhood that came with the experience. I became a corpsman stirker, and after returning to Alameda, I went to Corps School in San Diego, then to Camp Pendleton for Field Med Service School with our Marine brothers. Spent over a year at the Naval Hospital in Oakland, before being assigned to a Seabee Batallion ( MCB10, 31st Naval Construction regiment ) I was fortunate to survive, as most of my buds ended up with the 1st or 3rd Marines in NAM. Life has been good to me - married, 3 great kids, home in the burbs, recently retired from 30 years in the technology business. Have been searching out and finding old military friends......drop a note if you were on the 66-67 West Pac cruise.
Best to all = TIM |

Comments: I was sent to Coral Sea as a volunteer in 1980, just after doing a 9 month WESTPAC on Kitty Hawk. Coral Sea was one of the best ships I ever had the pleasure to serve on.
I look back at those months onboard as some of the happiest times i ever had in my 20 years in the Navy. |

Comments: Hello! I am glad I found this site. I would like to get in touch with some of the people who were on the ship between 1953 and 1955. My uncle, Charley T. Inmon was on the ship during that time. I am looking for information on him. He died in 1956 in a car accident shortly after getting out of the Navy. If there is a way possible, how do you become a member of this group?? Thank you for any and all help you can provide.

Comments: Haven't checked in for some time. Would enjoy hearing from any shipmate who may have known me or was in Heavy 2 or X Division during my era. Just wanted to comment on J.R. Millers third installment. This really brings back some memories. I lived in Oakland for a while in 61 & 62 on telegraph ave. I too caught the bus to Alameda. I remember what a S---hole Oakland was even when I was there. A place not fit for anyone to live. Also, my first cruise to Yokosuka I had the same thing happen to me in the head. I was in the "H Bomb" bar in thieves alley and had to whiz. I went in and while I was enjoying a good leak, a woman comes in and squats right beside me. I was taken back for a second and apologized to the gal and she then explained that the men and women used the same heads at the same time. Took some getting used to! Several other bars in thieves alley come to mind now. Remember the Black Rose, The Popeye club in submarine alley, The club alliance inside the gate where we got out MPC converted to Yen. I also remember losing our aft starboard elevator in heavy seas. Also lost one of our A3D's off the forward starboard with Jackie Young in the cockpit. He went to Davy Jone's locker with the plane. So sad! Anyway, thats enough sea stories for now. Drop a line if any of you would like. Regards,
Darwin "Hap" Litzell |

Comments: Third installment look for others below. Remember meeting bosun’s mate by the name of Barry. He took me under his wing and showed me how to get around Oakland and the bus to Alameda. How many remember the bus stop at Doggie Diner in Oakland. Nasty place for a desert rat from Arizona.. Lots of big city hustlers and hookers. Well on the 7th of Sept 68 we headed for Nam. First stop Pearl Harbor. I’m from Arizona so I had to go to the memorial it really needs to be seen. So many Sailors died in a few minutes. It reminds us of what being unready for attack means. This ship The United States Of America needs to pay heed big time now. With all our enemys at the ready and the present so called president at the helm. . The rest as I had been warned sucked big time. The locals only like money not squids. Strange happening there though. I was in a music store at the counter buying a Allman Bros album when it came on TV that Dwayne had just died in a motorcycle accident. This was a purveyor of things to come on this cruise. Next stop Yokosuka Japan. First time in a really different place. I had been in Mexico and Canada as a kid. I grew up on the Mexican Border so I was used to that. Barry again takes me into Yokosuka. First stop Whimpy’s hamburgers. Got to go to the head Barry points the way. I’m there takin a whiz in the foot bath toilet. Some broad walks in whips down her panties and does the gook squat on the other toilet with no emotion. What the hell. I go out and tell Barry. He laughs and says the heads are bisexual. LOL ok first lesson in strange places. I get introduced to the Brass Rail bar in Thieves Alley. Shit kicking music. I’m from Arizona and that’s what my dad listens to its ok but I prefer Rock. Next stop Subic and Olongapo. Now I’m Impressed. When I was a kid I always loved the war movies from the Philippines. Also a good friend of my dad was on the Bataan death march. I fell in love with the PI as a kid and I have lived her now for 15 years. Paradise or Phantasy Island call it what you will. Ok lets move on to the first line period 68. Hot nasty work on a fueling crew on the flight deck.. Days Nights Sweat and more sweat. Seems like no sleep. Norm Ridley was one of the V4 crew. An Eskimo from Alaska. There were 3 of the Norm, Andy Anderson and another one I cant remember the name. Norm came in on a kiddie cruise and wanted to marry his girlfriend. Nice kid. I’m in the fuel locker we hear the SHTF. Next thing we hear is Norm was hit by a plane and killed on the flight deck. He had only been there a few weeks. Dan Sauceda remembers this it was a really depressing deal. The next few months go on mix of day and night sweat and ports and getting drunk. As I said before the death of Dwayne Allman was a ghost that appeared again. Norm Ridley. Next I have a friend Johnny Buckles from highschool in Arizona. He is with the Whale squadron out of Widbey Island. One night I’m refueling a Whale and Johnny is there so is the pilot LCDR RODNEY CHAPMAN. Lcdr Chapman is really a nice guy. I have talked to him many times. He treated everything as just a job. He asked your first name and used it. Loved being a pilot but respected the little people and treated them like a friend. Well we are adding fuel to the tanker and he makes the comment this bird is really tired. I had noted there was hydraulic fluid leaking out. I finish fueling him up and he rolls off for launch This is in the evening about 2200 as far as I remember. Some time later we hear that Radar has lost contact . Lcdr Chapman was never found. Third time a charm? Who the hell knows Life sometimes leaves a sick feeling in the gut of what might have one done to prevent the things that happened.. Maybe it is just fate after all Last note ABF2 Thomas Jambor passed away in 2004 and ABF3 Paul John Suarse passed away in 2007 I will post more on this later these are confirmed Thanx JR |

Comments: Second Installment look for first below ! Well I arrived to the Coral Maru June 68 in Alameda. Got sent on mess duty for a few weeks. Worked in the garbage and steam room what a stinking mess. Then I got assigned to V4. We were getting ready to leave in Sept for Westpac. Decided one weekend to go to Haight Asbury and see it for my self. It was in decline from the year before. Arrived on a friday afternoon. Walking down the street looking at all the freaks. I hear someone yell Hey John. I turn around and its a highschool buddy from Tucson. Jack Sherman known as The Pope. Jack was quite a character. He dressed sometimes like a Catholic Priest as a joke. Crazy hippie stuff. Jack is really well known in The Haight and gives me royal treatment over the next couple days of the weekend. I actually meet the guy that was in the picture of a hippie looking like Jesus in his birthday suit. Some of the other well known hippies and seen Jefferson Airplane play for free in the park. Speaking of bands. Before I went in the service I had been to a free concert in Tucson with The Doors and Buffalo Springfield. Also I was friends with Linda Rhondstat and her family who was from Tucson before she moved to Cali and lived with Jerry (Moonbeam) Brown. During the years when we were back in Alameda I went to a lot of the shows at Fillmore west and Winterland. Few of the bands I remember were Santana, Sam and Dave, Beautiful Day, Good Brothers, Janice Joplin Big Brother and the Holding Company, Blues Image, John Mayall, and lots more. Jack London Square and the Bar where Tower of Power was playing have no idea of the name of it. I remember giving blood to help out Whitey the Congo Drum player. Continuing on the entertainment side. How many here remember Martha Ray with the USO show what in 70? Seem to remember something about that show and President Reagan's daughter getting caught partying with a marine on board ? ENOUGH FOR THE 2ND INSTALLMENT LOOK ABOVE FOR THE NEXT |

It's nice to see the comments and praise for a truly magnificent carrier, we all miss her (it's obvious). Seeing pictures of her steaming are a warm memory, pictures of her in Baltimore painful. Comments: My posts will be of the nitty gritty of life on the Coral Maru. Some of the lesser things that bugged the hell out of everyone onboard. And the things that we all did. Just starting the first post and realize this might be a big project. So watch for the posts. I graduated from boot in May 68 San Diego. After boot leave flew from Tucson Arizona to San Fransisco. I was on the airplane and the pilot announced they killed Teddy Kennedy. Got to San Fransisco airport like 11:00 pm. Went to the bus station no transportation. How lucky I was, I fell asleep in a chair and wake up with someone shaking my arm. I look up and see a nightmare of an ugly broad. Dressed in a Rabbit coat. I find out later this is Rabbit Annie. How many remember her? She used to hang out around Alameda especially the bar Dales outside the gate. Ok now were on the subject of bars a subject near and dear to the hearts of most squids. Remember Johnnies Locker Club on Webster in Alameda, Or Dales I mentioned earlier, Or Pios on Webster, There was also a bar near the railroad tracks on Webster the blacks used to hang out at. Then there were the clubs in San Leandro. Sam's bar in lake Berryessa (SIC?) Now how about the Golden Rail in Yokosuka, Also how many ever went to the waterfront for the maritime squids in Yokosuka. Thanks to Tom Jambor (HOOT)a ABF2 that was married to a Japanese and knew it well I was introduced by Hoot to the waterfront. Hello Yashiko if you read this. I talked to Hoot and you about 10 years ago and heard he passed away. New and Old Orchid clubs in Olongapo also Paulines and Papagayo resturant. Want to gamble there was the casino on the second floor downtown. Shhhhhhhh Also there White Rock Beach was a great cheap place to go and party. Set there one night and watched the Commie's and Cops having a shootout while drinking beer a retired US Navy flip that worked on the fuel farm owned it. All the divisions had their favorites and it kept things peaceful. My personal favorite place to be was the PI or Phantasy Island as the Philippines is known. I still live here. Japan was expensive and cold as the rest were. NEXT INSTALLMENT |

Comments: Came on board a few hours after the ship left PI in Jan 80; remember sailing around Gonzo and Camel Stations, and in the IO for 102 days. Lost a canopy during IO line period, almost an AT-2 in the process. The 81-82 cruise I was with XMAA Division (TAD from 196), made watch commander after 3 months. I remember sneaking up on the flight deck and standing near the chief from VF-154 that died up there during flight ops. I also remember freezing when we got to Hong Kong and Saesbo, Japan because we weren't supposed to go up to the colder climates, so we weren't really prepared. The Around-the-World cruise was nice, but we got cheated out of Haifa, Israel and Istanbul, Turkey be Kadaufi threatened to sink the Eisenhower in the Gult of Sidra, so after we transited the Suez Canal we got to go over and hold hands with her to assist if he tried anything. These were the three best cruises of the six I had. Also, the cleanest boat around. I really hated to see her go. She deserved a place as a museum, not razor blades. Good bye, dear lady. Long may your mememories live in us. |

Comments: I remember my first day on board the Coral Maru, They flew me from Da Nang by helo and I reported to my first duty station Cag 15, I was awe struck by the size of the hanger bay and all the activity. I transfered from seamen to airmen and was assigned to air traffic control for the majority of my time on board. I'll never forget the ports I've been to and the things I've seen, most good, some bad, some of the good ones Subic Bay P.I., Hong Kong, Perth Aus. +++, Singapore, Yokosuka and Sasebo Japan, bad one Hunters Point USA, if you where on board ship back then you know why. Here's to all my ship mates, good health, happieness, a fair wind and calm sea's |

Comments: He fellow Coral Sea'ers I just got back from San Diego and when I was there I visited the USS Midway at the Broadway pier in downtown SD. If you ever get a chance go and see this ship it will bring back memories. They have tours to the bridge, CIC and other locations thru-out the ship. They have about 20 planes restored from all era's of the Midways commission and they have Docents who served aboard her or on other carriers talking about there experiences on a carrier in the US Navy. It is well worth the 17 bucks for admission and you get some of the best views of San Deigo Harbor. D. |

Comments: well,40 years ago today,I stepped aboard the old CORAL MARU to report for active duty..I did so believing the USNR when they told me that carriers go out to sea for 3 months and come home for 3 months..hahahaha...I also believed the MLB team that I had signed with, that they would get me to just attend reserve meetings only and I could still play ball....hahahaha..while mess cooking for 3 months,I realized what BS was all about..BUT you know what?I would not have had it any other way...friends I made last a lifetime and I got to see places that I never would have visited otherwise...As far as the old girl goes,SHE WAS a dandy...cryn' shame what happened to her....IT WAS MY PLEASURE TO SERVE ABOARD HER!!!!HERES WISHING ALL FORMER SHIPMATES GOOD FORTUNE AND SMOOTH SAILING... |

Comments: When I found this site it literally brought tears to my eyes. I MISS MY GIRL AND MY MATES!!!! I was Radio Shack supervisor for the 86 cruise..(Lybian Incident?) (smile)..Looking to hear from some of you who was there. I chanced upon our Girl while she was being torn apart in Curtis Bay Baltimore..although it broke my heart to see what they were doing to her ..the moment was bittersweet. I at least got that final look CV-43. I'LL NEVER FORGET HER OR THE CREW!! And the awesome work we all did while extended at sea. Even now I want to applaud all my shipmates for a job well done! CV-43 LIVES FOREVER!!! PROUD TO SERVE!!! ON THE AGELESS WARRIOR! |

Comments: For those that have read and left comments on the Coral Sea Association web site, I just thought I'd let you know that although the ship is gone, the name "Coral Sea" lives on in the form of a U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Unit in California which has been named after the ship. To view the Unit's web site go to: http://seacadets - pomonavalley when it comes up, just click on it to take you to the web page. It lets you know what Events the Cadets from the Unit have been up to and what Trainings they have attended. It also contains photos of the cadets at Training and what some of the former Cadets are doing now after having enlisted themselves. |

Comments: Looking for any shipmates from the 1950s. Was aboard for the Med cruises and then the trip around the Horn for decommissioning in Bremerton. Then went on the Midway until 1958.
I saw Lou's name on here too, a 3" GM. I was a 5" GM. I suppose most from those days are gone. |

Comments: Hello Everyone I used to know a Marine onboard the Coral Sea. We met in Cannes. His name is Lcpl Joey Tilley. I was wondering if anyone had any pictures of him or knew him and could recall stories about him. Besides being a Marine he was also the DJ or one of the DJs onboard. He worked with Vic Demarco who was public relation. I met him in 1983 but he was onboard I think from 1981 to 84. Believe it or not, we found each other after 14 years of being apart. Such a miracle!! Anyway, I am trying to put together something special for him to remind him of his time onboard the ship. Thank you for your help. This ship holds very special memories for me although I never was part of the crew. Thank you for your help |

Comments: Well, I did not roll "clean across the deck" when we hit the Equadorian Oiler while we were in ref/trai in the Carribean! Just half way! It was a little jolt that you wondered what the heck happened and then they called "General Quarters," and I hauled butt to the Island Camera room and started scanning with the camera. Just pretty much got shots of a Helo surveying the bow area where the oiler ripped a whole in our bow. Which DC tackled like a champion after a couple hours, as we were taking on water pretty good, I heard from a chief who was from our division and was on DC. Did we lose anyone from that collision? Can't remember. Thought we did, or someone or some were injured from it. It was not one of her finest moments, that's for sure, as we just got out of dry dock. I was stationed on Gitmo for a short period a few months earlier when I first boarded the "Ageless Warrior." She proved herself very sea-worthy, and lived up to her name, though we spent a few more months in dry dock after that, and spent not just a small chunk of change to repair her! For the relatively short time a was aboard, I have nothing but good memories a take to this day from my time onboard. It was adventurous, though we of course worked a lot, which you expect on a carrier. When they are flying, were a working! And of course doing preventive maintenance (P.M.) when we were standing down, so to say, from flight-ops. I was proud to serve aboard her the time I did. Blessings in Christ, Todd |

Comments: Looking for anyone from Plat/Lens aboard in '85. Match? Our fearless leader Who used to play "Flight of the Bubmble Bee" before we went into action? Was on board sitting in a chair on wheels in the Plat control room when we hit the Equadorian Oiler. Rolled clean across the deck from the VCR Panel? Was also the unfortunate one who got knocked out from behind and stabbed 55 times while we were in port, on NOB Virginia. I'm alive and well and praising Jesus for the time He gave me after that, until glory and beyond! (saved in '93). |

Comments: Just checking in. It is nice to see that the old boat still carries a fond memory with so many of her crew. Being one of her crew (even though I was a airdale) has been one of the special points of pride that I have carried with me for many years and I know until I die. God Bless and clam sea's. |

Comments: Still recall the day LT. Hogland put the COD in the catwalk just aft of #2 elvt. Sure happy I did not say anything about that then. Because about three months later I single-handedly grounded the only two RF-8s directing one out of a spot in about the same place. CDR. Mauldin (Airboss) was down on deck before all of my ass had been chewed off by VFP-63s OiC. Thanks again Mr. Mauldin. |

May more I sure I left off. How do you forget skiing in france. New Years in Rome. Getting kicked out of a strip club looking for rayburns honey. thank you cadillac cahill. And to all those aboard between 86-89, I may have cut your hair, I hope it all grew back it wasn't exactly my calling! Then again neither was being a fire watch in the ship yard! take care Hoping to get a an email or facebook hit from any shipmates I might have served with. |

Comments: My Grandfather Rufus Earl Weatherly was aboard the USS Coral Sea. I have his cruise book from the 1954 Med Cruise. he is deceased now and i have a few pictures from that time. I enlisted in the navy because i wanted to make my grandfather proud. He was a Ship's Cook. I'm not sure what his rank was. i think it's amazing how the ships have come such a long way. I was stationed on the USS Kearsarge LHD3. I enjoyed my time at sea. I'm just on here as a grandaughter who is very proud of her grandfather. Thank you all who served on the USS CORAL SEA for all that you did.
Very respectfully, HM2(SW/AW) Marta Weatherly |

Comments: Just sailed into Norfolk yesterday on a tanker. Past the carrier piers and a good look at the Truman (75) sporting a lone black Hornet (partially obscured)and the new H.W. Bush (77) With another lone Hornet up top sporting a trendy multi-tone blue paint job and her power plants missing. anyway, the Norfolk cabbie tells me that the new Ford class carriers under construction in Newport News are designed by virtual reality software and feature more modern modular construction for a tighter fit with fewer welds, AND electro-magnetic cats for getting the birds off the deck. Those of you who havent seen the base in a while would hardly recognize it. The lot we use to park in near pier 12 is a well established series of multi-story buildings and the pay-phone maze appears long since gone from existance. I wonder if anyone has a photo of that place on arrival day? |

Made Med cruises in '55 and '56 before being transferred to the Randolf when the Coral Sea went to the west coast to get refitted for the angle deck. I was a 3"50 gunners mate in the 4th Div. I now live in Ocala Fl since moving from Ct in 2002.I want to say ,"Hi," to Ray and Ken. Haven't heard from you guys in awhile. Sorry I missed you Ken when you came to Ocala as I was called back east for a death in the family. Hope you had a good time at the reunion. Hard to believe it's been 51 years since getting out. |

Comments: Hi, I have been a member of the association since the reunion held in Savannah, Ga. I was a member of VF-151 which made 3 cruises aboard the Coral Sea between 1967-1970. I put Cruise Books for each of those cruises up for sale on eBay yesterday. They are being sold as a group 67-69 "San Francisco's Own" Blue Cover with Gold lettering. 68-69 "A Ship and the Sea" Black Cover with White lettering. The "Coral Sea Westpackage 69-70" White Cover with Red, White, and Blue lettering "Craker Jack Box" design. Any one interested should go to eBay and search for USS Coral Sea. |

Comments: Was aboard when she and I were both "kids". Visited her 3 summers while she was being cut up in Baltimore. It is a sight that no sailor is ever up to, seeing your old ship being destroyed. Can really say I enjoyed my time aboard. Served on a couple of LST's TAD after Coral Sea. No comparison about the ride. LOL Best thing I remember was putting it over on Chief Patton whewn he tried to get me shang haied to the flight deck as a plane pusher. Tough luck old man. Your dream never came true. Had it not been for him, I probably would have been a career sailor. One thing I CAN lay claim to is being one of the original incorporating officers who put this assn together. I'm real proud of that. As my shipmate Oscar says, "Later amn" |

Comments: I agree it is difficult to look at that photo. Could it be, deep down inside a part of us is saying "Good By" to our youth? Sad but true. On a lighter note, in 2006 I married the girl I met in Sydney in 1963. Thank you Coral Sea for the ride down under. |

Comments: I just wanted to say that each day I check into the site looking for old shipmates and to see the daily picture that is posted. Today's picture breaks my heart. Seeing the ole girl being towed to baltimore to be dismantled and sold for scrap is such a shame. I know all of us who served on her have very fond memories and we'll never forget her or them. |

Comments: I just found this web site!Fantastic! I lost track of my Navy buddies over the years due to a career in teaching.too many years have gone by and I'd like to reconnect with some of my old shipmates. I ran the IC gang while on board and would like anyone who remembers me to drop me a line. I would like to find Willie Green, Paul Hazen Joe lopez,WO Brown. If anyone knows these guys please give them a call and look me up. I was in Baltimore a few years back visiting friends and saw the "Old Gal" being cut up. I went down to the pier to see her one last time and tears came into my eyes. She was a great ship and a real steamer. Thanks, Oj mcdonald ICC |

Comments: My tour of duty aboard USS Coral Sea was very challenging. It was aboard this ship where I changed rating from Steward to Storekeeper. I developed few friends among my shipmates, unfortunately, I have been unable to locate them. I am actually searching for Robert Deems who used to call me George and James Avery. I believe Robert Deems was from Pennsylvania and Jim Avery was from Soledad, California. |

Comments: Just found this sight, and it brings tears to my eyes.... My Father, Norman D. Steiner served aboard the Uss Coral Sea from around 1960 to 1968. I remember as a child looking up at that great big "boat" and trying to understand how a person could find their wa around it. My father was proud to serve aboard her and unfortunately, we lost him in August of 2004. I have always held a special place in my heart for this girl, and I always will !!! Thanks for having this site !!! |

Comments: Some of the best times of my life were when I was on that boat. The time we spent in Japan, Korea, and of course, the Phillipines was great. I left her right after she went to the shipyards in Bremerton. I believe I left around 12/78, and I still think of her to this day! Great ship - should have been a museum........ |

Comments: I was 17 years old when I boarded the ship and while we were at Golfe Juan France several of us took a tour to Paris and I spent my 18th birthday there. I learned a lot while I was on board (probably lots of stuff that I shouldnt have) and have lots of great memories of my time on board. I have lost contact with lots of my friends that I knew on board. Primarily George Calhoun, Jimmy Sobon, O.A. Peters, Dick Newman and many others who were in V3-O Div. I have been to several reunions but havent been able to attend lately due to the time of year of the meetings. Group of us usually go on a REAL cruise during this time each year. |

Comments: USS Coral Sea CVA 43! Impressive everytime, everywhere. Our squadron VA 153 flew A4D's. I was an AT3 and a plane captain for # 308 on 1st cruise 1960 and part of 2nd cruise 1961 & 62 until I made PO2 then worked in the AT shop. As I look at it now; what a fantastic trip it was, what great memories; Moffett field, Alameda, Falon Nevada, Pearl Harbor, Yokosuka, Sasebo, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Mount Bandi Ski trip, Kobe, Subic bay - -anyone remember new years eve on Okinawa - wow what a night, or how about new years eve at Sasebo. And what about the "pearl of the orient", Alongapoo. I remember losing elevator #2 and I was there on the flight deck the night Lt Tom Cress, VA 153, A4, with full buddy store attached, crashed into rounddown, sliding up the deck and crashing into A4's on port side exploding and disappearing into the night - what a nightmare - Did you read Lt Cress's poem in the cruise book? He really was a great guy and an terrific pilot. I wouldn't trade a second of any of it though. Heartfelt Thanks to all who contribute to the photo's and web sites; they are irreplaceable Treasures. |

Comments: Today's picture showed Polly Wogs crawling on the flight deck 1975. Had to laugh if I could blow it up I might see me. Crawled from the hanger to an elevator than onto the flight deck. Some humor in an otherwise depressing deployment. The abandonment of South Vietnam and the seizure of SS Mayaguez. |

Comments: Are there any good Veteran Service Officers (VSO) out there? We think so. In fact, we have a growing directory of VSOs nominated by veterans. These VSOs have demonstrated excellence in helping veterans secure service-connected claims and increase ratings. They return phone calls too. If you need a good VSO in your area visit our web site at http://www.veteranprograms.com.
Keep up the good work on this site. As stated previously, we added it to our monthly newsletter as a resource for all veterans. Thanks! |

During this time I made 2 WESPAC cruises which included the normal ports and Vietnam and Australia which was my favorite place. I got out of the Navy for awhile and worked at Internal Revenue Service for 13 years but spent the last 27 years as Office Manager at Magnum Custom Trailers in Austin, Texas.
