Comments: Hey Dave Hilton....Sorry to hear about Tom. I remember working and partyin' with him on occassion. He was a good soul. I check back here once in a while to see if anyone else I knew leaves any lines. Like Jeff Million says....Where are all the bosin' mates? Have you heard from Pete Meadows? David Lawson? This is a nice tribute to the Coral Sea. I remember climbing to the top of the mast while dry docked at Bremerton, damn thing swayed a little...LOL. I remember also standing at the bottom of the dry dock looking up at the huge rudders and thought how they would shake the ship if ya didn't ease back on the wheel...LOL. It was an experience wasn't it? |

Comments: Does anyone remember when one of our A-6 Intuders taxied off the starboard forward elevator and slid all the way across the hanger deck and collided with an A-7 and ran it's refueling probe thru the tail of that plane, I got some good pictures of that. How about the A-7 from the Midway that landed on the Coral Sea and got a new spray paint job from the flight deck guys. I have a book from the Air Force Museum that has a good shot of it, I'm in the picture and remember it well. Also did you know we came very close to a huge disaster equal to the Uss Forrestal, I don't think too may people are aware of this incident, but one of our Intruders was in the midsection of the hanger bay and started dumping fuel all over the place, before we got it shut off it dumps a huge amount of JP on the deck that sloshed around as the ship rolled at sea, I grabbed a fire hose and charged it while I watched them close the fire doors around us trapping us in the middle, I remember looking down when pulling the hose and seeing a sailor recharging LOX bottles in a shallow pan. The sloshing fuel splashed around the pan which had beads of LOX in it, if any of the JP had splashed just a half inch into the pan we would have had a major disaster. I'm sure we wouldn't have finished that line period and I wouldn't be writing this story. Lucked out big time. Also the admiral that was killed in the air accident and the time we had ships company Marines on guard outside the cooler for a day or so. I have only had a few brief contacts with guys. Would like to here from anyone. |

Comments: I made 1st class without even being on a carrier except for training exercises on the U.S.S. Lexington. Here I'm supposed to be a leader but I have younger men teaching me how to survive. Thank God that I had the great Squadron of Va-55 personnel to make sure that I made it through that cruise. I am looking for information on how I could get a copy of a Cruise book from the tour that I made. Hoping for your assistance in my search. I wish everybody a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and God blessings to everyone who served with me and those who have and are serving our Country. |

Comments: Most of of our M Div (59-63) shipmates have been contacted or otherwise accounted for. Signing in again this year just in case one of the unaccounted for decides to peruse through these guest book posts, and is curious about someone they knew back then in M Division. Be glad to share whatever information we have with you. I wonder how many remember the pre commissioning crew "rocking and rolling" Coral Sea in Bremerton Washington while tied up at the pier in 1959? Not many have ever had that experience and most people look at you with a jaundiced eye when you recall that story. I'm afraid if we did it today it would be a might slow roll. |

Comments: It's still around and that's great. I signed this in May of 2003 when I first got my computer. Well I've been in touch with Roy Maxwell BM3 and still in touch off and on. I've been trying to find John Foley BM3.....but NO connecting. Maybe 7 years later for me to sign on again.....maybe John we can connect. John and Roy were on the Coral Sea the same time in the 3rd Division. Along with Roy, John and I did some sight seeing in Hong Kong and I have movies of that besides almost the whole cruise. A small reunion would be great with the shipmates on my time on the Coral Sea. I would like to hear from some of you guys. Dan L. Johnson SN |

Comments: IT'S BEEN AWHILE SINCE I'VE PUT FINGER TO KEYS. HAD TO RETIRE, AND NOW 67-70 LOOKS EVEN BETTER. I CAN REMEMBER WHEN IT WAS CRIMINAL IF YOU DIDN'T HAVE YOUR FIRST BEER 20 MIN AFTER LIBERTY CALL. NOW IT'S "LOOK AT THE LABELS ON THE PILL BOTTLES TO SEE IF YOU CAN HAVE ONE BEER, AFTER 5PM ON SAT." BUT THEY CAN'T TAKE THE MEMORIES AWAY! I CAN SIT IN MY RECLINER AND HAVE SOME REAL GREAT LIBERTY CALLS. NOT A SHORE PATROL IN SITE. MAKES MY WIFE NUTTY BECAUSE SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT I'M SMILING ABOUT. WE COULDN'T MAKE THE GET TOGETHER IN FLA. HOWEVER, WE WILL TRY TO MAKE THE NEXT. I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY GREEN SHIRTS MAKE THESE BIG TIMES BUT I'D SURE LIKE TO SEE HOW GRACEFULLY WE HAVE ALL AGED TOGETHER. WHEN WE LIVED IN CONN. I HAD CVA 43 FOR MY VET PLATE. OUT HERE IN AZ THAT WAS GONE, AND THE CLOSEST THING I COULD GET WAS CVB 43. IT'S AMAZING HOW MANY VEHICLES WITH VET PLATES WILL HONK, OR WAVE, OR PULL UP AND ASK ABOUT WHERE, HOW LONG, AND SEVERAL TIMES IT WAS SOMEONE ON THE CORAL SEA. IT'S A HOOT! IT HASN'T ALL BEEN PUPPIES, AND LOLLIPOPS SINCE ACTIVE DUTY...THERE ARE TIMES WHEN CERTAIN THINGS CAN JUST TURN A DAY INTO MUD...BUT WE ALL BROUGHT BACK THE SAME MUD. SO SCAPE OFF OUR BOOTS AND HAVE A HAPPY VET'S DAY. AND MAY ALL YOUR MEMORIES THAT STEAM AROUND THAT PROUD LADY IN GRAY MAKE YOU SMILE IN IN YOUR RECLINER TOO. BUT NEVER TELL YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER. HAVE A GOOD LIBERTY CALL MY BROTHER. |

Comments: I am the daughter of Jack H. Cotton who serve aboard the Coral Sea in the 1960's. I am going through some photos and keepsakes from the Coral Sea, trying to determine what some of them are.
I have a photo album titled "Fighting Eighteen Able" it shows the Commander as PN Charbonnet, Jr. when I found he was a commander of the Coral Sea 1964-1965, I assume the Fighting Eighteen Able are a flight squadron from the Coral Sea. If anyone has any information, I would love to hear from you. |

Comments: I am an authenic plank owner of the USS Coral Sea CVA 43. I was a member of the precomissioning(sp) crew In 1959 in Bremerton, Wa. Capt. Grey was our first CO. I made 3 trips to WestPack and on our 3rd trip we stole the Flag from the ST.Paul. I ate BBQ Monkey Meat in Subic, drank 151 and went with a wonderful "Cherry Girl" named Lynn. I bought ciggarettes for the Negritos. I ran the 2 Bake Shops aboard ship. I was a close friend of Big Daddy. My Div. Officer was a 24 year W4. and he talked to nobody except the Capt. I never stood personal inspection. I got my haircut, laundry and cleaning done in Officer's Country. I was supplied with Flight deck Shoes and Flight Jacket. I watched a 17 year old shipmate who was a Plane Capt. on an A3D get pushed off the Elevator when he had improperly secured his craft. I saw 3 cold shots off of the flight deck. Most people don't know we were part of the secret war in Cambodia and Laos before Viet Nam. I was one of the last Ship's Company members to be initiated when crossing the Equater. I am a Certified Member of Neptune's Kingdom. I am an Authentic ShellBack, there aren't many of us left. M. Williams, 3706702(service#). Proof of service available. Please excuse my spelling. I am so proud even though I have been forgotten. I have more stories than I am willing to share. Being on the Coral Sea(we called her the iron pig)was being with the woman you love. Permission to go ashore sir, Williams CS2. |

I spent the rest of the week watching the riggers load the aircraft aboard the ship by crane...weird I thought, why don't they land them when we pull out to sea? That was the beginning of 3 years 6 months and 12 days I had the privilege to serve aboard her. I made good friends...I miss them too. I got out and became a professional pilot after my tour. |

Comments: Wow I haven't been on for awhile. I never see any fresh air snipes from R Div. I was in the DC Repair shop and fixed just about every door or hatch on that ship. Funny I got out in 87 and went to work in Newport News Shipyard and installed ballistic hatches and doors. I also ran Repair 1 forward, repair 3, and 7 during GQ. Would like to hear from Michael Parker out of Munster Indiana, The Dobbs twins from the valley CA, and anybody from R-Div in them years. |

Comments: Great to see all the former shipmates at the Tampa Re-union...had a very good time. Wanted to be sure that everyone has the web address for the Coral Sea Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps which is located in Pomona, California. A week ago, the address was changed to: http://coralseadivision.org
If you have a dificult time reaching it, just go to the "old Web Address" which was: seacadets - pomona valley and just click on the link to the new address. I left a little info on the old page as well as some photos to look at of the Cadets going through trainins, tours, and parades to give you something to look at showing what the Sea Cadets have done in the past...enjoy ! |

Met a bunch of great old shipmates, need some younger blood, to keep the memories of the ageless worier going. If you served aboard the old girl, you need to join us. We stayed up late , in the hospotality room and regaled each other with truthful and acurate sea stories. |

Comments: Was known to buddies andshipmates as the "real" Steve. Enjoyed serving on board and the good times while in port shared with Larry Ballard and George Wright. While in Alameda CA met wife at USO Club in SF. Missed you guys over the years. -- Note: Stephen William Caccia Jr. died on October 6th 2003 from Lukemia. He was originally from Providence RI. Steve is buried in the KY WEST VETERANS CEMETERY (one of the first 150 interned there. He loved the Navy and only left the service because I his wife of 40 years didn't realize as a young bride what the Navy ment to him. He died pround of our yougest son who is currently a SFC in the USArmy (22yrs) and our eldest grandson(9yrs) also serves and is currently a Drill Sgt (E-6) training the young men and women who are our future Veterans. I found the Coral Sea to be huge, fasitating and intimitating as a nineteen yr old bride yet felt the samesense of loss when she was retired . THANK YOU ALL FOR HAVING SERVED YOUR COUNTRY AND MAKING the USA a safer, freer country A JOB WELL DONE. Respectfully Mrs.Stephen W. Caccia also known as Shirley Caccia- |

Comments: 50 years ago today I reported aboard Coral Sea in Bremerton, WA. It is amazing the number of memories that are still clear after that time. 3 westpac tours, coming back thru the Bering Sea, going to Australia and crossing the Equator at the international dateline becoming Golden Shellback. Liberty in Yokosuka and Hong Kong. Also all the men. Still in touch with some of them and would like to hear from anyone in the division at that time. She will live as long as I do. Wish the best to all who served on her. Smooth Sailing...... |

Comments: I first wrote an entry to this book 7 years ago. Since then I have found several of my shipmates, including Steve Lucking EM2, Bobby Goodner EM2, Bobby Wayne Coomer EM3, Ken Brown, EM2 (gotta give him a call), Colvin Laney EM2, Ken Slemmons EM2,I just learned of the passing of Steve Dedual EM2, who I served with in Lighting Shop. He retired as a Detective Lt. in the Gulfport Mississippi Policed Department. He passed away on Tuesday February 23rd, 2010. We will all miss him. Bill Scheunemann, EM2 passes away in 2006 in Ancorage,AK, He is survived by his wife Sue and his son who is in the Ancorage Fire Dept. Bill was a good shipmate and friend. We spent many hours in good conversation, and liberty together. I also had the opportunity to have a long conversation with Capt (RAdm) Jim Ferris a few years before his death from complications of cancer. I will always remember him as a fantastic leader and gentleman of the first order. All of us are getting older and it is time we all got together for one (maybe more) Liberty Call. |

I hope that you remember me. I left the Ship when we arrived Statside on 4/18/69. We had a lot of good times together during that cruse. Get back to me with an e-mail or a phone call. Call me at 859-250-3727. I'd like to BS with you about the good old days as well as some other QM's that I've contacted. See ya! |

We are trying to track down proof my health issues are related. I was off ship on a tanker mission to fuel the outgong fighters and the tanker ran low on gas so we had to bingo into DaNang. I have to find out what A-3 detatchement was assigned to the airwing. Appreciate any clues you may remember. Also, any idea how I might find the paper work showing I was on that fueling mission? Thank you. Aaron Wheatley |

Comments: Looking at today's picture. I remember all those ferry rides we had to take to get into Naples because we were to big to pull up to the docks. All that standing in line, getting sprayed on rough water days but we always had cold beer to drink on the way in and hot sliders to eat on the way back. AHHHH the good ole days. |

Bootcamp 1976 - San Diego -- Who knew I would eventually move there!
Grew up in Alameda.. Guess where I get assigned for first duty? .. Coral Sea in Alameda!
Getting to Olongapo a few days before the ship ... so my first experience there will last forever...
Seeing the ship for the very first time as it pulled into the Phillipines on the 77 Westpac
Typhoon off the coast of Japan a few weeks later... seasick.. yes seasick on a carrier for another week!
Firewatch crew in Bremerton!
Playing pinochle while with Firewatch!
Pokernights!
Working and bunking under cat 2
Crossing the equator - You bet your ass I am not a wog!
A long time at sea during the Iran hostage issue and the reward being the movies on the flight deck. The US hockey team beating russia then having the MIG flyovers!
Every Single time we went under the bridge to come back home!
Seing loved ones waiting for us on the pier.
To all of you who may or may not get this message,
I just wanted to say Thank you. I am just one person but thanks to the influence of the navy; those who pushed me so that I may build the confidence and character to deal with adversity: to the friends that we made who we would do almost anything for; Even to those people and places that we didnt like but learned from anyway;
Most of all to everyone who served or serves our country today, You all know what it means to have to step up when called upon, to be responsible, to mature and to fight for what is right!

Comments: In 1967 or 68 a zoonie rocked misfired abord the ship,I was one of the corpsman in sickbay that treated the injured. I actually initially treated James Wooten, we flew all ths survivors to the phillipines what happened after that. Just the thought of what they went threw plagues me to this day. I relive it every night. |

Comments: Hello-I work in the Defense POW/MIA Office, our mission is to account for the remains of servicemen from previous wars. I am reviewing the case of LCDR Bauder and LT Mills lost in action 20 Sep 1966. Are they any personnel that served on the Coral Sea, in the Combat Information Center for that period? I would like to discuss this case with someone that worked in Air Plot that may have been tracking his F-4 before it disappeared off radar.

Comments: This is directed to Rick Shuffleton: I believe Golden Shellback was awarded in April 1963. Wasn't there but heard guys talking about it. Chuck Espersen, Norm Krimball, George Kazmaier, Chief Owen. I came on board September 1964. Assigned to Foxes. If I recall correctly, you were my first boss in TDS. Mo Owens was there too. Comments: I served aboard Coral Sea (CVA-43) when we lost our number three elevator. We thought we would be sent back to the USA for a fix, but no, we continued until the cruise ended. I remember the last rivet. Sailing under the Golden Gate. Roger Tholburn, Dave Mahan, Terry Catlin and many others. I need a patch for the CVA-43. Seems like I can only find CV-43. Can anybody help me? |

Comments: I am writing for my father-in-law, Nick Giambra. Nick passed away better than 15 years ago. He was a "plank owner" of the USS Coral Sea. Nick saved many things from his time on board. I figure most are from the initial Mediteranian voyage. I have scanned in things like the dinner menu and the hymn book from Christmas 1947. Also the menu from July 4th 1947. I would like to share these if the crew is interested. Looking for information regarding the "plank owner" status. Any others out there that can give me information? It would be appreciated. Just trying to honor Nick's memory. |

Comments: I had been in an A-4 training squadron (VA-125) with less than 10 months left in the Navy in 1968 when I got orders for the Coral Sea. I met the ship in the Phillipines in October or early November of 1968 and was released on Sept 22, 1969. I enjoyed my shipmates and was able to experience Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and of course, the Phillipines while also enjoying some time in Bremerton Washington as well as San Diego, California before getting out. I wonder if there is anyone who served on the Coral Sea on that late 19689, early 1969 cruise who recalls a death of a 17 year old sailor who came out of a catwalk on the starboard side and ran into the path of an F-4 Phantom that was being launched off the port catapult and was killed by contact from the leading starboard edge of the F-4's wing? I was witness to that event and it's stayed with me in a very bad way. I really hope someone can supply info including the name of the kid (who I met on a few occasions in the chow hall)and the date of the incident. It would really help me out. I've tried to put it out of my mind but it's reared it's ugly head and my counselor wants me to get that info, if possible. Thanks so much! My cellphone number is 860-214-0231 if you'd prefer to call rather than email because my email address sometimes clears stuff out as spam before I have a chance to read it. |

Comments: Hey, does anyone remember an OS from Brooklyn named Lopez in OI division/CIC from about January of 1975 until December of 1976? I'm not proud of some of the stuff I did, but certainly remember the good times. Do the names Brad Elkins, Mike Lorback, James Tarantino, or Benjamin Taylor ring a bell, and if so, has anyone made contact...especially with Benjamin Taylor? He was the one who led me to pray the sinner's prayer, and although I didn't get saved right then and there...he did plant a seed. I believe the Lord is coming back in our lifetime, so make your calling and election sure. "The Lord is nigh them that seek him; them that seek him in truth." (Psalm 148:8) |

Comments: Was aboard the Coral Sea during the last 2 months of final cruise. Got to experience alot that I had never done before, being away from home for the first time. Had a long flight to Italy, then spent 7 days on a destroyer tender, circling the Coral Sea before helo'ed on board. Got to meet and work with a great bunch of guys before the Navy's decommisioning of the ship, later CAG 13 and after that, our squadron. |

Looking for any of my old friends and shipmates. I could also use a cruise book from 86 as mine was never shipped to me when I got out. Any help there would be greatly appreciated. |

Comments: I have great memory's of my time aboard the Coral Sea. I was in the S-2 Division and later transfer to VAH-2 Squadron where they left me tad to the galley. I'm from Tacoma,Wa but since 1970 I've lived with my wife in Warren,NJ. I saw the Coral Sea in Maryland and it made me sad as this is where they scraped her. I wish they did not do that. But to all those I served with I hope all is well with you and you too have found memory's of the Coral Sea. |

Comments: Coral Sea was like moving into a mansion from the geto. Two back to back cruises on Ticonderoga (57-58 & 58-59)then Coral Sea (60-61)made me appreciate that bigger is better.Made these cruises as a VAH-2 AT, the CS electronics shop was great.Flying off CS (60-61)as enlisted navigator I can attest that the weather Men were the greatest, what they said was what we got.The CS navigators always were where they said the CS would be when we returned 4 hours later.CS even had a 1st class mess. Coral Sea was my first duty assignment after Commisioning.Master Chief Gorball (FOX DIV) took me under his wing and taught me how to be an officer! I will never forget him or the engineers who taught me what made CS the ship she was. |

Sydney was a magical time for us, and I've often thought about those two glorious weeks in 1963. I met a girl named Merren Beach. We talked about marriage, but it never happened. I heard that 250 sailors did get married to Aussie girls when we were there. |

Comments: I never thought I would say but I miss the ship, I went onboard as an non rate airdale did two med cruises and was in decomissioning crew and thinking back I saw her dying slowly and some of me went with her. Many things that I do today could trace back to the Coral Sea. I'm still in contact with my best friend from backn then and I owe that friendship the her. |

Comments: How about making the Ageless Warrior. The saint ship for all the lost. Those with no hope can put their faith in in the Ageless Warrior for their redemption. Many of us did in the past we had no hope she brought us thru and we live today. Thanks to her crew that only served to prove that there is hope for mankind. Mankind only needs hope and to defend themselves at all costs. Stand up and be counted add to the strength of you own kind. We the crew of the USS Coral Sea did this for generations. We all survived. With minor losses. Our Proud Lady went down because of her age. Nuff said. One of the last things we of the proud lady said. She's an old bitch but still puts out when she kicked Kadaffys ass in Liybia. Enuf said |
