Comments: One of out V-1 Rep.8 passed on August 18, 2011 in Clewiston, Florida. Ronnie Thornton went to the Lord this day. Ronnie will surely be missed by his shipmates. He was also the best at acquiring goods as needed for what ever we needed it for. I would think the P.O.'s are still wondering where their stuff went. Someone asked him how he lost his leg, and he replied: "I lost an arm and a leg in a poker game, but I won the arm back". The entire waiting room laughed...he had served on a gun-boat in Viet Nam. |

Comments: I was never permantely attached but when I added up all the times I spent on detachments on the old gal it added up to almost 1 year. I still have my USS Coral Sea CVA-43 belt buckle.(collectors Item). I was attached to VC-5 and made many many trips from Da Nang to Yankey Station along with many dets for carrier quals for our pilots. I was in VRC-30 in 81 when we went on the Pineapple Cruise to Hawaii for operations in that area. I brought out many Pounds of mail, people and parts. The one thing I will always remember is the DOWN WIND Cat shots we always got. By the way, You got mail wasn't coined by AOL. VC-5 did. We found out that when we got to yankey station upon first contact if we said YOU GOT MAIL we got roger that go into the break, other wise we had to go into the starboard Delta for who knows how long. We also used the same tactic on the Kitty Hawk, Connie, Ranger, Mighty O, and all the rest. |

Comments: to all who were at the st. louis reunion my hats off to the spouses and service personal that serviced on the coral sea. it was my 1st and it now is on my bucket list to revisit at least annually. the renion was tops. ive met ol salts that ive have steamed with.boy did we have some stories to straighten out. also to the rest of the sailors and spouses that were great to be with. ill make sure my spouse will be with me at the next annual. i have a step father that was on the coral sea, ishould have brought. he was on in the lat fiftys and earlier sixties. and he was a air dale. when we first met and shared our stories about our tour on the coral sea, he ask if they changed any thing from then till i arrived in 74. i said yes they took down the sails and pulled in the oars. we really laugh that one off. be safe to all. |

Comments: I started out in 1st division in Nov of 1963 right after the Coral Sea returned from Australia. I got sick of hearing about that place, it must have been great liberty there. I transfered to G division in late 1964 and stayed there until June of 1967 when I left the ship. I served 2 more years in the Navy after the Coral Sea, a year aboard the USS Shangri La CVA38 and a year aboard the USS Roosevelt CVA42. Yes!! 3 carriers in 6 years. Then I left the Navy!!! It was a great time for sure. I made 2 West-Pac cruises and 2 Med cruises, how great is that. |

Comments: Let me introduce myself I am the young lady, young at heart at least who was engaged to Hal Nelson ex USS Coral Sea. I am also a Registered Nurse with lots of qualifications and experience . If you take notice of anything take notice of your shipmate when he asks you to have your vital organ checked. Remember that the Good Lord only gave you this life so make the most of it. at least nowadays the treatments are more advanced. there is hope for all of you who are unfortunate enough to have prostate problems. and yes I can't imaging that there would be any sailor in any navy who didn't overuse his toolkit and maybe contact one of those diseases that polite Ladies not only don't talk about but pretend that they don't know about. So where does this leave me. Firstly I never said that I am a lady. I am a nurse and get paid to deal with these problems. when people ask me what I do for a living I usually say " Well I take mens pants off." It does pay to have a sence of humour. But remember that Prostate problems are no joke. So Gentlemen Man up and take those trousers down for a real cause. It may save your life. Just something extra about me. I too spent time in the Military, no not the Navy. I am a Green Beret

Comments: Yesterday I gave a fellow vet a ride to the VA Hospital in Madison, Wi. Like all visits there, I wore my Coral Sea CVA43 cap. That cap and I sure attracted some attention. met two diffrent DD sailors that escorted the Coral Sea in diffrent years. Must have talked to 4 more old salts that knew one thing or another about her. One from the Midway, one from the Roosevelt, and then on the way out the door another fellow shook my hand and told me how he was allowed to train a drill team in the hanger bay....all from diffrent years aboard...but all still very much proud of the association with her...but I guess we all are! |

Tour of duty in the 7th Fleet. From 1964 to 1967 Stationed in Japan in Squadrant VR-7. Veteran of the Vietnam War he received several Metal of Honor that were bestowed upon after the war.

Comments: I was fortunate enough to make the final deployment on the Coral Sea and nowadays I find it hard to make it thru the day without coming to this site to see the pic of the day. After the Coral Sea I wound up on 3 more carriers with VF-11 and VF-32 and though the ships were bigger,faster,newer and cleaner my time on the Coral Maru will always be the highlight of my naval career. The reason I need this information is because I have Prostate Cancer and Diabetes, and as we know can be cause by agent orange exposure. |

Comments: I remember being on board from todays picture on this website. Man was it cold up near Alaska and Siberia. I remember doing unreps with heavy weather gear on and no gloves. The boiler techs would come out of the stack and they would start steaming it was that cold. |

Comments: The Coral Sea Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corp has re-located from Washington Park in Pomona, Ca. to Cable Airport in Upland, Ca. in order to have more of an exposure to the Aviation Field for Cadets.
Of the Divisions 18 Cadets, 15 of them are attending Training and Advanced Training Evolutions this Summer in Search and Rescue, Medical, Field Operations, Naval Intelligence, Recruit Training, and Leadership Training at various bases and aboard Naval Ships in California. In addition, the Unit will be providing Cadets to assist the ships crew of the SS Lane Victory out of San Pedro, Ca. in August for Underway Training off Catalina Island. |

This is Father's Day weekend. I am blessed to still have my father alive to celebrate with. He is a veteran of the Korean War with the Air Force. I am so proud of him and his service. However, today I think about CDR Wendell Rivers. I wore his name for years on a POW band. I prayed for his safety, his health, and his return home. Until today, I never knew if he was released or returned from Vietnam. I am so thrilled to see CDR Wendell Rivers returned to America. I hope he received the welcome due him. I send my sincerest thanks to him and to his family. I also hope this simple wish of happiness on Father's Day can make its way to him. I wore his name proudly 38 years ago and still have the bracelet in a box. God Bless you and your family. CDR Wendell Rivers, Happy Father's Day!

the Forward Emergency Diesel (Electric) Generator.I'd really like to hear from anyone that remembers me.I ran into Renato S. Camileo at a reunion held at
Williamsberg Va. and I've reveived a couple of letters from Phil Thout. If anyone knows where Robert (Moe) F. Mollnebernd got to let me know or tell Moe that Rusty would like to hear from him.Moe left the Coral Sea in Pearl Habor and went for Submarine duty. I think that it was in 1965.
It really irked me when the Navy Dept. changed their minds about making the
ship into a training ship and had her scraped out in Baltimore Harbor. I was in Baltimore and saw her first hand in a sad state being cut up for scrap. Still have some great memories of my time aboard. snipecastle@oh.rr.com

Comments: Just checking in. Has been several years since last post. Am still looking for shipmate Dennis Woolworth from X div personnel office. Would also like to hear from anyone who was in VAH2 during the 60-61 cruise or from X div during the 61-62 cruise. On a sad note, I just recently found out that one of our shipmates from X division passed away this past April. His name was Gerald Sylvester Sosnoski. Most of the time we just called him "Ski". Ski retired from the Navy as a PNCS and owned a bar/resturant in southern wisconsin for several years. He sold that in 2006 I believe, and moved to Arizona. He was a good, honorable man and was only 71 when he passed. Would enjoy hearing from anyone who may of known him during his Navy days. Take care everyone and try to stay healthy. Regards,

Comments: I was the Air Operations Supervisor from mid 1966 until the day before she went back to Vietnam in August 1968. I wept when passing in front of her bow while leaving. A really sharp ACAN named Bill Miller from Provo, Utah drove me to the airport at San Francisco. I know that most of my shipmates have now passed on but it would be great to hear from those who survive.

How I hated that job when I was a boot. All the more reason to make rate so you didn't have to do the worst jobs down there. It seemed hard then, as I look back, it wasn't that bad. Olongopo, Yokosuka, Hong Kong, Sasebo, Singapore, Last stop Sydney in 1970. YAY!
Anybody out there from my time? Cline, Nichols, Fletcher, Flagel, Buehler, Darling, Romero, Torres, Reynolds, Brucker, Pippin, Stan??, Dumlao(Ho Chi), Dove, Dean,?????? I don't have the cruise books in front of me, so I'm forgetting some. Put something on here if you're still around.

Comments: I was reading the 2010 guest book and saw an entry from Daniel Tom PN/3 and thought I remember him and wrote an e-mail reminding of some of the guys in Personel Office at the time he was there. I did get in touch with Ron Roberts afew years back and enjoyed speaking to him. It was a lot of fun working with these guys. The ones I remember Are Costello, Hamm, Haley, Dempsey, Melton, Francois, Curnan, Currah, Westergreen, Bruce Plein (legal) Dick Carr (Education Office) Litzell, Bell, Noble Print Shop guys and a Yeoman from Minneapolis, cannot remember his name, just his mustache. Roberts, Costello and I worked for Jack Dempsey. Belive me he in no way resembled "The Jack Dempsy" we all relate to. For some reson Jack and I never hit it off to well. I'll never forget how many times I've heard "Hoesley" you will not hit the beach tonight". Well, I'm sure I had it coming. Any way I got to make it to one on these Coral Sea flings maybe I'll run into some of these guys. It was a pleasure knowing them. |

Comments: While just out of Radioman A School awaiting to board ship for 3.5 years duty on the Coral Maru, I helped put up a large "Yellow Ribbon" on top of Coit Tower for the ship's '74/75 WestPac crew returning to San Francisco on June 2, 1975 (changed from CVA-43 to CV-43 at that time). The "Yellow Ribbon" was built by the "Navy Wives" Organization at Alameda NAS.
I served on CV-43 during the Long Beach Ship yard overhaul, the San Francisco 1976 BiCentenial (where some fool turned on the hanger bay sprinkler system on the visitors), WestPac 12 to Yokusaka (ship got kicked out the second time), Pusan (ship had to pull out early to avoid the big storm first time), and Subic Bay in 1977 (Ship had to return to Subic after large storm waves broke several antennas off th side of the flight deck), and finally mustered out November '78 during the major overhaul in Bremerton, WA Shipyard... Loved crab netting off the piers and riding dirt bikes around Port Orchard with my Radiomen shipmates...fun days! |

Comments: Glad I ordered a cruise book from this cruise.Highlights that I can remember, were
as follows....... Largest Naval excercise of carriers and battle groups conducted
since WWII off the coast of Alaska in Bering Straits.( Aleutian Islands )
Cannot beleive that no War on Terror was called for after hundreds of Marines were attacked/killed in their barracks at Beirut,Lebonan
We had a couple of ports cancelled in the Mediterraen Sea,( Spain,Australia )
so we could go participate in a Naval blockade against Russia, they were trying
to smuggle weapons into Nicaragua in Central America.
Great job by the ships crew painting the big smiley face on the radar dish
at he end of our journey. Got my High School diploma on this world cruise
after dropping out of Thomas Jefferson High School with a GED.Became a Shellback after crossing the equater on this world cruise. |

Comments: I was able to get my supplemental health insurace for free, starting in 2011, thanks for being a veteran. I am still helping many vets with their benefits. Starting this Thursday I will be attending for 8 weeks6-9PM seminars on Veteran's Benefits through the VFW. If anyone needs help please let me know. |

Comments: first off wish all a merry and a happy happy. iwas on the waddell ddg 24 after boot camp in sept 72 thur 73. we plane guarded the coral sea. it was pretty awesome on the power that ship had, we would chase her from port to port also waiting in line for the spoils. then in jan 74 i was transfer to the coral sea to 4a firerm, where i spent jan 74 thur oct 75 as part of what was going to be the best part of my life the shipmates i met. more important the snipe gang i was a part of we were had alot of war stories above and below dicks. to all who served her i salute you. any ol snipes wish you and yours well. 563-590-1527 |

Served my entire 4 year enlistment in V-3 Division working on the hanger bay, as much as I hated it at time I would have never missed the opportunity of serving on this great war ship and meeting all of those men who I served with. After the passing of time I have very fond memories of my time in the Navy and as crew member of this proud ship. |
