Comments: Served aboard the Coral Maru as my 1st carrier. She was older than anyone aboard her at the time. Always dragging a screw, evaps were almost always down and had enough JP5 in the water system that was guaranteed to make a cup of coffee that LITERALY got you going whenever .I am sooooo proud to be a Coral Sea sailor as know other ship in the fleet had the personality that she did.

Comments: Would like to wish all my shipmates a very happy and prosperous Christmas and New Years. Was just thinking that 53 years this week we were anchored in Buchner Bay, Okinawa and we were quite suddenly ordered to get underway. At the time most of us thought that we were heading for Cuba but we were in fact ordered to the South China Sea and put on DEFCON2 alert. This was due to the communist aggression in Laos and we were rendering assistance to Laos. This was a clandestine mission at the time and there were 2 other carrier air groups with us. This was an on-off thing for several weeks. I have official documentation concerning this operation if anyone needs it for VA benefits, medals etc. Take care all and feel free to chit chat any time. Regards,
Hap

Comments: Thinking back, I really enjoyed my tour of duty aboard the Coral Sea. Didn't think so at the time though. I met a lot of great people and saw a lot of exciting places I would never have if I hadn't been aboard the Coral Sea. I did meet my future wife while on liberty in Hawaii. She was from my area back in Nashville TN. and was there for a friends wedding. We corresponded until I got out in July 1970 and married in June 1971. We have 3 sons and 1 daughter who have given us 6 grand sons and 4 grand daughters. I also learned a trade, boiler operations, that I worked at for 38 years after I got out and retired. I still correspond with some of the old crew members I met and have met new ones at the VA Medical Center here in West Palm Beach FL that were stationed on the Coral Sea before and after I was. So, I guess I did make out pretty good by being on the Coral Sea

Especially the extra 20 days spent at Cubi Point when something major went wrong in Engineering and the ship had to return to the Philippines shortly after leaving Subic Bay. It was an extra 20 days in paradise. 1977 if I remember correctly.

Comments: An update to my previous posting below. The young man I am looking for is in the 1966-67 Cruise Book in the group photos that I found online for VAH-2 and VAH-2A.
His last name was Boyce.
If anyone knew him, I would love to hear from them. I am seeking any information, pictures, or artifacts connected with him for his son, who was born after his father had died.
His son, Ed, is a good friend of mine and I'd truly love to be able to help him know something more of his father from those who were his friends.

Comments: I am seeking anyone with information on a young aircraft mechanic by the last name of Boyce who would have served on the Coral Sea during the Viet Nam war.
He was from Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
He had a son who never got to meet his father as he had passed away before he was born. His son was born in August of '68.
I am a friend of his son and am trying to find anyone who knew this young man that may have any pictures, a cruise book, stories, or artifacts that my friend might like to have as a way of connecting with his Dad.
Sorry the details are a bit sketchy, but I hesitate sometimes to ask my friend too many questions...I know he misses his Dad even though he never met him.
I can tell you that the fellow I'm searching for was the son of Samuel and Ruth Boyce, and had another son by the name of Ronnie who has also passed away.
I'd appreciate any assistance. Thanks. My Email is cerridwen.llewellyn@gmail.com

I have all of his papers he saved from the Navy.

I just wanted to say that, he passed away March of '08, lived in Omaha from 1959 until '81, when the airlines- then named Republic, transferred him to Nevada. That company was formed when North Central Airlines merged with another and became Northwest, then later became Delta. He retired in the '90's.

He lived doing -and getting paid- for what he enjoyed, mechanic for the airlines, was an avid camera collector, and loved doing ham radio for many years. His call letters were wa0-rpw. I may not get to come to this event, but I'm sure he would have loved to come.

Comments: Attention all Shipmates: Several years ago the membership of the Assoc. requested that we petition the Sec. of the Navy to have a future ship named USS Coral Sea. I've started this campaign by sending the attached request to my Senators & Congressman. I ask that you all please do the same. I'll have a list of the members of this Congress on the website hopefully in two weeks. I'll be in Wash., D.C. next week as I'm a member of the VFW National Legislative Committee. The issue of naming a future ship Coral Sea will be discussed with my Senators & Congressman. In addition, legislation is pending to recognize those of us who oserved in the Vietnam War in the "Blue water Navy. I'll have more on that later.
Godspeed to all & I hope to see you all on Omaha.

THE CASE FOR NAMING A FUTURE US NAVY SHIP
USS CORAL SEA

The battle of the Coral Sea, fought in May, 1942 marked the first time in world Navy history where the opposing surface forces did not make visual contact with each other. The entire battle was fought with aircraft launched from both American and Japanese aircraft carriers. The USS Lexington CV-2 was lost in this battle as a result of battle damage. The strategic significance to this battle was that it stopped the Japanese advance toward Australia. It being the first naval battle fought strictly with airplanes is why USS Coral Sea CVB-43 received its name. It was the practice of the US Navy at that time to name aircraft carriers after battles or former ships of the US Navy.

USS Coral Sea CVB-43 was actually the third ship so named. The first Coral Sea was an escort carrier that served in WWII and later renamed USS Anzio CVE-57. The second Coral Sea became USS Franklin D. Roosevelt CVB-42; the name change occurred at the time of President Roosevelt’s passing. CVB-43 was the third and last of the Midway class of aircraft carriers and carried the name from it’s commissioning on Oct. 1, 1947 until it’s decommissioning on April 30, 1990.

USS Coral Sea CVB, CVA, CV-43 had a long and distinguished career. It’s most significant accomplishments were it’s involvement in the Vietnam War. It spent more time operating of the coast of Vietnam than any other aircraft carrier. It fly the most missions, dropped the most ordinance and unfortunately, had the most air crew loses of any carrier during the Vietnam War. It made the longest deployment of the war, 331 days. It was involved in the evacuation of Saigon in May 1975 and also was involved in the SS Mayaguez incident.

One of Coral Sea’s later great accomplishments was with USS America CV-66 in April 1986 when Libya was attacked.

During a deployment in the Indian Ocean in 1980, Coral Sea spent 101 consecutive days at sea, a record that until more recent years had never been broken. Coral Sea earned the nickname “The Ageless Warrior” because indeed she was a “Steamer”. At her decommissioning, Coral Sea had recorded the most arrested landings or “traps” of any carrier with the exception of USS Lexington AVT-16 which was the training carrier at Naval Air Station Pensacola for many years. Coral Sea had durability second to none.

It is indeed fitting that the history of this great ship be honored by naming a future US Navy ship USS Coral Sea. Perhaps naming an aircraft carrier cannot be done even though that would be very appropriate. However, naming a guided missile cruiser or an amphibious assault ship after “The Ageless Warrior” could be done. Therefore, I respectfully ask that the necessary action be taken to name an appropriate US Navy ship USS Coral Sea.

Comments: I am writing in an attempt to assist my father-in-law George P Sinkovich. He served on the USS Coral Sea CV-43 during the years I listed. We have made several trips to Washington and I have been searching the internet to find any available information on a Leonard Semen who served in the air division on the ship between 1966-1967. This name does not appear on the MIA or KIA lists. According to my Father-in-law this man went overboard on a night watch and he is somehow saying he is responsible that no one remembers this Leonard Semen. We can't get him to let this go. If anyone has any information on Leonard Semen and is willing to share it would be greatly appreciated.

There is another crew member he talks about but I am unable to get him to give me the name at this point. He states that he was best friends with this gentlemen and was this gentlemen's best man. He is hoping to touch base with this gentlemen any contact information or possible leads would be appreciated.

If anyone has any information on either of these crew members or if anyone is interested in getting in touch with George P Sinkovich. Please contact me. Any help is appreciated as we are dealing with PTSD and these are now focus points.

Comments: My husband served as an observer on the 38th in Korea in late May early June of 1962 when a Navy plane got shot up by the North Koreans while spraying the 38th. What he is sure of is that it was painted white and had a 3 man crew. He knows that it came off an Aircraft Carrier anchored in the South China Sea. He also said that it was a Navy Bomber that had been retrofit with spray equipment. Our question is did you have any of your planes painted white and if so did you have any retrofit with spray equipment that was shot up on it's right side? Joe has said that the plane lost it's right engine and limped back to the ship. He said that the commander of the ship gave the guys who defended the plane am oral commendation.

I still remember our criuse in 1962 when we went to Sydney, Australia for the 20th Anniversary of the Battle of The Coral Sea. The people down there welcomed us with open arms and I fondly remeber conversations I had with old WWII Aussie Vets who expressed their heartfelt thanks for the US Navy's actions against the Japaneses Navy which prevented them from invading Australia. In 1962 the beautiful Sydney Opera House was brand new and that city really impressed us "Yanks" with it's scenery and friendly folks.

I'd love to hear from some of the guys I knew while aboard the Coral Sea, especially my best bud Dominick Suniga.

Comments: Can't remember if it was the 60-61 or the 61-62 far east cruise but the cruise book from one of those contained a 78Lp record with the sounds of the ship on it. I have since misplaced mine but I remember several years ago there was a Coral Sea web site the had that recording on it. Can anyone tell me if that site is still around or where I might be able to get a CD with those sounds. I remember those 2 cruises very well. I enjoyed every day I spent onboard. Would sure like to make one more cruise before I retire to that big flight deck in the sky! Would enjoy hearing from any shipmates from VAH2 or from X division . This Easter Sunday will be 52 years ago we were in Hong Kong. I remember it well because I got my first (and only) tattoo in the back room of a clothing store. It was kinda hidden because all tattoo parlors were off limits at the time. I had to hide that tattoo for a long time!

Comments: When I left in July 70 the boiler fuel was NSFO, Navy Special Fuel Oil, mostly referred to as "Black Oil". It needed to be heated to 140°F before it went thru the burner nozzles.
Very dirty stuff. The sprayer plates and burner nozzles had to be cleaned usually once every watch. At 600 hours of steaming time "firesides" of each boiler were cleaned. Cleaning consisted of manual scraping of the tubes closest to the firebox and water washing, using a 1.5" firehose with the Emergency feed pump supplying the water.
I know that some other ships in the mid 70's were using what they called "distillate fuel". Much lighter and cleaner burning. I don't know when or if the Coral Sea switched to that.

Comments: GOOD SUNDAY AM!
REGARDING MY LAST ENTRY REGARDING THE NAMING OF A NEW SHIP FOR THE CORAL SEA.
I HAVE RECIEVED NUMEROUS e-MAILS, PHONE CALLS FROM FORMER MATES. ALL AGREE!!
I CAN'T DO THIS ON MY OWN. WE NEED A CONCENTRATED EFFORT! BALLS TO THE WALLS!
ALL OF US LOST TOO MUCH SWEAT, BLOOD, TEARS, AND LOST TOO DAMN MANY FRIENDS TO DISABILITIES OR DEATH.... EVERYBODY WHO READS THIS LOG NEEDS TO CONTACT ALL OFFICERS OF THE ASSOCIATION. WHATEVER IT TAKES. WRITE, CALL, e-MAIL, OR BANG ON THEIR FRONT DOOR. LET'S GET THIS GOING. DO IT FOR THE CORAL SEA, AND CAPT. FERRIS. IF HE WERE STILL ALIVE HE WOULD BE THE FIRST ONE KNOCKING ON THOSE DOORS. MOST OF US ARE IN THE 60'S, OR RETIRED. WE NEED TO GET OUT OF THE RECLINERS, COUCHES, WHATEVER YOUR SITTING IN. GET UP!!!!! IF YOU ALL THINK THIS IS A PRIORITY FOR OUR POLITICIANS YOUR STILL SITTING ON THE BAR-STOOL OF DENIAL. IT IS OUR PRIORITY. IT IS OUR MAIN OBJECTIVE. THIS IS ON US. SURE, WE ALL HAD SOME LOUSY EXPERIENCES. BUT TIME WOUNDS ALL HEELS. WE NEED RUNNERS. NOT A BUNCH OF OLD GOATS WITH BAD FEET!!! COME ON ASSOCIATION OFFICERS. LEAD. LEAD. LEAD. YOU HAVE A POTENTIAL 2000 VOL. THAT ONCE AGAIN ARE READY TO SERVE ON, FOR, WITH THE USS CORAL SEA CVA 43.
SORRY TO BE ALL HEATED UP. JUST TURNED OFF OBAMA'S DENIAL THAT HE IS NOT AGAINST
WEAKINING THE NAVY. THIS MAN NEEDS TO SPEND ONE NIGHT LAUNCH ON THE FLIGHT DECK.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL. I SINCERELY CARE FOR EACH ONE OF YOU. EVEN "FRENCHY" FROM MAINE WHO STILL OWES ME $20.00 FROM A CERTAIN CARD GAME...

Comments: We were in PLAT back then. Saw a lot of aircraft launch and recovery off that vessel in the Viet Nam years. But then I got out of the Navy early in the anti-Viet Nam years so I was one of the lucky ones. What I remember most about the Coral Maru is taking a job as a Communications Engineer for ComSat General in Gathersburg, MD and having a repair job in Norfolk, VA. When I drove down I-95 and came out of the tunnel and seeing the BIG 43 in lights on the Island sitting at the dock. It was a real site for me. The last time I seen those numbers was in the Bay of Tonkin in 1966 flying off of that vessel in the COD to fly back to San Francisco. The next time I saw that BIG 43 number was when I was working on the ATT Longlines cable laying ship in Baltimore, MD. There was the USS Coral Sea lying in a breaker yard being taken apart by men that had no idea the world she came from. All she was now was a piece of scrap metal. My high school buddy that was on CVA-34 USS Oriskaney. We always thought the Navy had mixed numbers for us when we left 'A'-School said that at least his carrier was a reef in the Caribbean. I just laughed.

Comments: The USS Coral Sea
by Daniel Parks

‘Tis midnight on the flight deck
of the Carrier, Coral Sea.
War’s sorties flown, the day is done,
out on the China Sea.
The night is black, no moon or stars,
I walk the deck alone.
I’ve got the watch, the mid’ to four,
and wish I could be home.

Flight op’s secured, the flight deck’s cleared,
all hands have gone below.
The only lights are running lights,
I feel so all alone.
With planes chained down, the only sound,
ship’s angry engines groan.
The cold wind blows, the ocean’s cold,
my thoughts drift back to home.

Far off away, the distant blaze
of lightning lights the sky.
Off to the west in Vietnam,
so many men have died.
I pause to hear the sound, if near,
of distant thunder’s moan.
But there’s no sound but blowing wind,
across the ocean’s foam.

It’s zero-one, an hour’s gone,
my watch is slipping by.
I think about their loved ones,
and how they must have cried.
In this land so far away,
what purpose could there be?
And are we really doing this,
to keep our homeland free?

In the darkness, watch your step,
the deck’s edge could be close.
Watch for chains, arresting gear,
and aircraft catapults.
Ship changes course and heels to port,
a wide turn in the sea.
I wonder if back home tonight,
my love still waits for me?

We lost two men just yesterday,
their crippled plane went down.
No hope of rescue from the sea,
it’s sure they both had drown.
I spoke to one before his flight,
he said he had no fear.
But then again, how could he know,
his death would be so near.

It’s zero-two, I’m half way done,
I pull my arms in tight.
And brace myself against the wind,
it feels so cold tonight.
When I get home, I’ll hold her close,
that girl who waits for me.
And maybe then I’ll soon forget,
about this troubled sea.

The darkness swallows up our wake,
cold, misty clouds eclipse.
Horizon scanned for distant lights,
strained eyes can see no ships.
It seems we’ve sailed so far away,
no other ships allied.
My thoughts, once more of Vietnam,
and of the men who’ve died.

The carrier sails forever on,
it’s like we’re far at sea.
Unnerving thoughts of fear and death,
are watching here with me.
Trying to dispel their dreadful hold,
I think again of home.
But they persist, won’t give me rest,
while watching here alone.

It’s zero-three, an hour more,
and then my watch is done.
Ship’s stacks are belching acrid smoke,
the sulfur burns your lungs.
I inward weep for those in war,
that had to give so much.
And thankful be, out on this sea,
away from death’s cold clutch.

Brave men have died in Vietnam,
and on this troubled sea.
And for their country, sacrificed,
so others can live free.
The war has taken from our best,
young men who’ll never know,
Of love and peace and happiness,
the things they wanted so.

It’s zero-four, my watch relieved,
another takes my place.
I turn to go, but looking back,
it’s written on his face.
He’s seen the dark, forbidding forms,
the ghosts of fear and dread.
He walks alone….the cold wind blows,
thoughts swirling in his head

He served in the Vietnam war era on the USS Coral Sea. I only met him twice in my life and I'm afraid I can't help with very much information about him other than he was a Chief Petty Officer and he wrote to me a few times saying his guys were known as "Zuke's Gooks." As I get older my desperation to find someone who knew him who could tell me what he was like, who he was, and how he lived, grows. I would give anything to find someone who knew him and just sit down and talk and I wanted to give this a chance. God Bless.

Comments: QUESTION?
I SERVED A SHORT TIME ABOARD THE USS ENTERPRISE CVAN65 BEFORE GOING TO CVA 43.
THE ENTERPRISE HASN'T EVEN HIT THE SCRAPYARD YET. AND ACCORDING TO TODAY'S CNN REPORT..."THERE HAVE BEEN 7 OTHER WARSHIPS TO BEAR THAT NAME, AND THERE IS ALREADY A PETITION TO NAME A YET TO BE BUILT CARRIER THE NINTH ENTERPRISE." ANY-
ONE SEE SOMETHING OUT OF WHACK WITH THIS CNN REPORT? THE CORAL SEA WAS DECOMISSIONED IN 1990. WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE ABOVE INFORMATION? IT HAS BEEN 23 YEARS SINCE "OUR SHIP" WAS DECOMISSIONED! I HAVE NEVER HEARD ABOUT A PETION, OR SEEN A PETITION TO HAVE THE NAME "CORAL SEA" ASSIGNED TO ANOTHER USN SHIP. ANOTHER CARRIER WOULD BE GREAT. HOWEVER, ANY SEAGOING SHIP WOULD BE A PROUD MEMORIAL TO THE CORAL SEA. IF A PETITION WAS NOT STARTED, WHY NOT? I READ ALL THESE COMMENTS, AND RECIEVE eMAILS FROM OTHER SHIPMATES. TALKING ABOUT THEIR GRANDCHILDREN, RETIREMENT, OLD MEMORIES ABOUT THIS, AND THAT. ALL VERY NICE. HOWEVER, I THINK THAT THE FIRST THING ON THE AGENDA, FOR THE ASSOCIATION, FOR ALL OF US, FOR THE NEW YEAR, IS TO START TAKING SOME ACTION ON BEHALF OF "OUR SHIP!" I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST THE USS ENTERPRISE, HOWEVER I BELIEVE THE CORAL SEA'S RECORD OF SERVICE OUT TRUMPS ALL OTHERS.... LET'S GET OFF OUR COLLECTIVE -----, AND GET READY FOR AN "ALL HANDS" I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M THE ONLY ONE WHO FEELS THIS WAY. IF I AM, THEN WE ARE ALL WRITING INTERESTING COMMENTS IN THE LOGS. IF YOU REALLY FEEL A LOVE FOR "THE AGELESS WARRIOR" PROVE IT! HOPE TO HEAR FROM SOMEONE IN THE ASSOCIATION. IF A PETITION DRIVE HAS BEEN ALREADY TRIED
IN THE PAST WITHOUT SUCCESS THEN I APOLIGIZE FOR MY STUPIDITY. FAILED ONCE! DO IT THIS TIME! SORRY IF MY WORDS SOUND A LITTLE GRUFF, AND STRONG. OLD AGE HAS PUT MY DISPOSITION IN NEED OF A LONG LIBERTY CALL. VITAMINS DON'T HAVE THE SAME AFFECT AS A WARM BLACK LABLE IN A RUSTY CAN ON GRANDE ISLAND! DAMN, THAT SOUND REAL GOOD. IT'S SNOWING, AND 19 DEGREES!!!! ARIZONA ISN'T ALL A "DRY HEAT!"
BEST WISHES FOR THE NEW YEAR. LET'S HOPE IT'S A GOOD YEAR FOR ALL OF US. AND THE "AGELESS WARRIOR!" THANKS.
