Comments: ARE YOU REGULAR NAVY?

Willy and me were lollygagging by the scuttlebutt after being aloft to
boy-butter up the antennas and were just perched on a bollard eyeballing a
couple of bilge rats and flangeheads using crescent hammers to pack monkey
shit around a fitting on a handybilly.

All of a sudden the dicksmith started hard-assing one of the deck apes for
lifting his pogey bait. The pecker-checker was a sewer pipe sailor and the
deckape was a gator. Maybe being black shoes on a bird farm surrounded by a
gaggle of cans didn't set right with either of those gobs.

The deck ape ran through the nearest hatch and dogged it tight because he
knew the penis machinist was going to lay below, catch him between decks and
punch him in the snot locker. He'd probably wind up on the binnacle list but
Doc would find a way to gundeck the paper or give it the deep six to keep
himself above board.

We heard the skivvywaver announce over the bitch box that the breadburners
had creamed foreskins on toast and SOS ready on the mess decks, so we cut
and run to avoid the clusterscrew when the twidgets and cannon cockers knew
chow was on.

We were balls to the wall for the barn and everyone was preparing to hit the
beach as soon as we doubled-up and threw the brow over. I had a ditty bag
full of fufu juice that I was gonna spread on thick for the bar hogs with
those sweet bosnias . Sure beats the hell out of brown bagging. Might even
hit the Acey-Deucy club and try to hook up with a WESTPAC widow. They were
always leaving snail trails on the dance floor on amateur night.

If you understand this, you're Regular Navy.

Comments: I was the Last Marine Sergeant to report to this ship, we that is myself a First Sergeant and a Lance Corporal finally caught up with Coral Sea when the Ship pulled out of Israel in a hurry. So I got to my first sea duty on the tail end of her journey back to the states and thru hurricane Hugo and a port of call in Halifax which I had one of the best port of call in my long career.I still can remember why I walked sideways with a slight lean and a couple of gashes in my big head. Crossed decked to the Lincoln and the rest is history! I did get a last peek of her when I was home on leave and she was berthed in the Naval Yards in Philly, I kept lookin' back in my rear view mirror as I crossed the bridge to I 95 heading to Camp Lejenue. For the short time I spent on Coral Sea it was a blast, seeing Burt Renolds and Loni Anderson in Florida and preforming Drill in the hanger decks messing up the non skid that the squids just put down on the decks. Dont take it personal we were just doing what we were told. You gotta admit we did look good drilling, the C.O. my bad, the "Skipper" had a hard on for our drill platoon. I would like to get just one picture of us Marines preforming just once maybe a film if that could be. I still could do the drill in my sleep all that practice just for the brass. Ya gotta love it! Nope dont think so. Well Gents I can say that because this was before women were allowed on board carriers and the navy still had there Marine Detachments, Ship Company, that is.... I hear in scuttle butt that they might be going back on board, ya'll never learn.....SECURITY ALERT, SECURITY ALERT.... "This is NOT a Drill"...Gang Way, Gang Way, Get the F#&k OUT of the way!!! Sergeant of the Guard coming thru!!!! Randall, Out... Secure the Security Alert! Night Mare over..

Comments: I remember my berthing compartment was above main control. in order to get a drink of water from a scuttlebutt we had to go up to second deck and down three passage ways. That sucked at three in the morning......WHile on our way to quarters one morning I noticed an unopened box in the passage way just below the flight deck somethere. Mind you I had placed an order for a scuttlebutt several times only to get turned down....opportunity was knocking....so I grabbed a couple of guys and we carried that box to the berthing compartment.... two days or so later....we were called to the flight deck for a manditory engineering muster...it was put to us that the Admiral wanted his scuttlebutt back ...no questions asked....we broke from the meeting and it was returned....several days later the chief engineer approved our scuttlebutt and it was mounted right outside my rack...I literally could lean out and get a drink..em04 and em01 groups both were very happy..........

Assigned to EMo4 division "steamin demons" We were 6x6 with a full work day and I was the new supply petty officer.Yuk hand scribing 1250's in the middle of the night for a $1.19 spindle bearing. Achieved a top notch MMOW in engineroom with in first year then ESWS took hold of me.....Had this knack for learning more than that wasw required of me...Became a Chief of the watch in main control as an MMFN....which led me to not only sailor of the month for engineering department but eventually beat out the airdales too November 1980. Made two westpacs and then a south pac with 9 other Coralsea peeps and went to Austraila.....Oh and by the way for the mess cooks whom privided "Special" midrats to us in EMO4 egss and bacon and steaks cooked by removing the top front lagging pad of the hp turbine and calling over to 4c fireroom on the phone to raise up the superheat for us. And then there is the many times of the ship being on water hours....boy did us hole snipes smell good .....thank god for an air ejector water sample line and about 10 feet of rubber hose...and one last thing in memorium ...MM2(sw) James Michael Carter. Godspeed my Friend whom is manning the Throttles in heaven....

Thanks to me I never went to the plane pushers div. (V1-F) I know that that must be a great disappointment to you. Because of you I didn't do my 20. As long as there was miserable people like you in my Navy, I wanted no part of it. I heard that XO James Gray died. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. When I heard he had passed, I treated my wife to a steak dinner at an A rated restaurant here in New York. Are you still alive? Richard J. Fochler should have been put in charge of that division. Not you. He deserved it 10 more times than you did. And he was only a first class P.O

Comments: I used the search engine for Cdr. Charles Gillespie, Jr. I came upon your site and others. I wore a POW braclet for this honorable man during the Vietnam War. I never meant the man I prayed for nightly before I would go to sleep. Back then we did not have the internet to answer the questions on our POW's. I did see where he was released, but on another website he died. My brother recently passed after 40 years in the military. He had a form of cancer caused by Agent Orange. He was a US Marine Sargent. He served two tours in Vietnam and was a gunner on medical lift helicopters in the Danang area. I had him honored at the Wall for the In Memory Program this year. I recently found Cdr. Gillespie's braclet in a jewelry box I had put away and decided to surf the internet. God Bless all our honorable men and women that are serving and have served our country. Thank you does not seem to say enough!

Comments: Hello,

My name is Stephen Vincent Smith. I included my middle name because my Uncle was Capt. Vincent Smith, Chaplain (Catholic) aboard the USS Coral Sea, I would say from at least 1960-1972. Sadly, he passed away in 1986 at his home in Toms River NJ, which is a few miles from the Lakehurst Naval Air Station. He is survived now only by his older brother, Michael, a retired Philadelphia police officer who is hanging in there at 93 years old. After seeing a documentary on HBO about an Army surgical hospital in Iraq, I was very touched by a compassionate chaplain at the hospital. It got me thinking about my uncle, and what he was like aboard the Coral Sea, especially during his tours in Vietnam. Alhtough I was 14 when he passed away, I never really asked him too much about his experiences and somehow it seemed there were things he'd rather not talk about. If anyone out there has any stories to share, it would mean so much to my father, brothers and myself. Thank you for your time and for all you've done for our country.

Regards,

Stephen Smith

Jerry,

I have documentation that shows we were in the gulf of Tonkin and South China Sea rendering support to Laos against communist aggression during the 60-61 cruise. We we DEFCON condition 2 alert for several weeks. You should have be awarded the Armed Forces Exped. Medal or the Viet Nam Service metal. Your DD214 should be proof enough if it shows you were deployed on the Coral Sea. Send me an E-mail at mrhap&chibardun.net if you want more particulars. I sent you a message but don't know if you got it. It seem that when I click on any email addresses, I get a different address each time. regards,

Further to the above, if I am a vet, can anyone direct me to the person or person who can validate my claim?

There was a pic taken of DeHaven in foreground with CoralSea in background.Noted combat artist R.G.Smith painted an oil painting from that photo that is displayed in the Pentagon it is titled "Sudden Squall"...The USS DeHaven Sailors Association made copies available to members.I have a copy and the hull numbers 727 & 43 are clearly visable.

Comments: Would someone ..... anyone, be kind enough to take time to write to me and explain why there are two association sites. I didn't know this one existed until today. I'm confused at these two association sites. What is the reason and logic for two?

I was part of the re commissioning crew in Bremerton in 59. Worked in #1 main engine, then final time as M-Divison yeoman. Made two WETPAC cruises 60-61 and 61-62. Went to San Diego Reunion 06, I may go to Las Vegas 07.

We have developed a goodly number of e-mail addresses of MM's from 59-62 years.

Perth Australia was great! Even though liberty there was delayed by the Mayaguez Rescue. I had a lot of fun in Olongapo City. I tried, but couldn't visit every bar there. Mornings after a night of Olongapo City were pretty tough. One of my most vivid memories is when we were steaming through 60 foot seas in the Indian Ocean (I think) on our way to the Mayaguez Rescue. Waves were washing over the flight deck. For a carrier, that was a pretty rough ride. take care, Richard

What an experience. The collision of the Equadorian tanker, the switchboard fire during ORE's, the loss of one of our F/A 18's on the flight deck, Tomato flavored ice cream, Christmas Eve mass with the Pope in Rome..I could go on and on.. The best years of my life. Really sad to have seen her torn apart here in the Baltimore harbor. She went down fighting though. Many big fires. I just watched a History Channel documentary about a group of WWII Navy vets who brought the old LST 325 back from Greece after refitting her. Now she's a museum. It made me think of my days back on the Coral Maru. Did one West Pac and the world cruise from Alameda, CA to the shipyards in Portmouth, VA. If anyone from E Div. is out there and wants to get in touch, feel free.

My tour as EWO during 1984-1986 is something I'll never forget. The camaraderie between the air wing folks and ship's company was something to remember. I'm sure that other carrier crewmen feel the same about their carriers, but Coral Sea duty was something special to me. I was last aboard her in 69-72 time frame, flying mail out to the crew as they returned from WestPac. At that time, I was in VR-30 as a COD crewman. Great times.......both back then and in the Med.

I am trying to locate former Navy pilot,Lt. Earl Lewis,jr, who was originally from Virginia. I was told he retired as a Commander and is currently somewhere in California.I understand that he flew off of the Coral Sea and was subsequantly captured on 10/24/1967.During that time an organization distributed bracelets of POW/MIAs which were to be given to that person upon returning home.I recently found his bracelet that my husband, who served in the Marines during Viet Nam, had purchased. It would be an honor and a privilege to present it to former Lt Lewis or his family along with a long overdue" Welcome Home"! Thanks for any help.

It's been a while so thought I would update. I was a plane captain with the VF-11 Red Rippers. Foe those who may remember, we had the silver banshees. Would love to hear from any shipmates from that era. She was a good one. Hated to see her go. When they were stripping her, I stopped by on a trip down the east coast and watched for a bit from a civilian ship across the river. It was not a good experience. Checking in again about a year since last time. I saw Larry Darveaux signed in, too. Still have not heard from others on the Coral Sea when I was there. Some great times: Hong Kong at Christmastime; Yokosuka in the snow, having a shaft and all four screws replaced; Tokyo; landing in Vietnam to refuel on the ship's V6 plane; Subic and my sweet little gals there; San Francisco and the bay area; the Supremes all wasted after doing three shows before coming aboard at Yokosuka; Many more. I hope you all have just as fond memories. Larry "Pinky" Pilkinton, ATN3

Great web site! I was happy to see all of the dates of significant events. Does anyone remember a maneuver called "pinwheeling?" All jets were on the flight deck, engines roaring, with their tails outboard. Their combined power alone is what powered us into port. It was a Japanese port--maybe Yokosuka--in 1962.

I got to visit the Midway museum in San Diego on Easter Sunday. It instantly took me back to those days on the Coral Sea. The guys I was with laughed because I started ducking as soon as we got on board. The only disappointment was there was very little mention of the Coral Sea anywhere aboard.

Got together with Hugh Kelly and Joe Costello in march of this year 2006. Anyone else from CIC or Ops out there? Send me an email and we will get together again. Went to the Midway and she was just like the Coral Sea but not really. There are two planes on deck from our Grand old lady of the sea. Brought back a lot of memories. They still charged us full admission to get onboard but it was worth it. OS3 Charlie Dodge

I was an RD2 when I was aboard the Coral Sea. I left in order to attend schools and got out as an EW1. I was on several ships, but the Coral Sea was the best. I remember spending Christmas in the Tonkin Gulf, and we hung stockings on the wall of the PM shop. One of the guys got up in the middle of the night and filled them. It was neat.

Was a visitor to the Coral Sea as part of a trip set up by the US consulate when she was at Hong Kong during 1962 or 63. I've still got some of the pictures I took. During the same week or so we also had a school trip to visit the HMS Ark Royal - at Hong Kong at the same time. Coral Sea was much more impressive. It was a Brit school and we Americans were very proud of the Coral Sea.

We were steaming back from WestPac to Alameda. General quarters sounded in the middle of the night. After we had been at battle stations, the Captain came on and told the crew that President Kennedy had been shot. Al lot of us thought for sure we were going to war and not get to Alameda. I think we ran aground not too far from the pier in San Francisco Bay at Alameda On the day Kennedy was buried. Can't recall the Captain's name, but he was relieved of command shortly thereafter.

WestPac 79-80" 102 continous days at sea, remember that one? It was a record that didnt stand long. I boarded about 70 days into that float after 4 weeks in transit starting from San Diego ending up in Diego Garcia hitching a ride on the Kilauea to the Coral Sea and the I.O. oh the joy! Captain Dunleavy was the CO and a good one who later was retired a Vice Admiral. WestPac 81-82" was shaping up to be another long one until Reagan got elected and the Iran hostages were set free. All hands were issued 2 hot beers per each, those who did'nt drink sold them off for upwards of 20 dollars a can or more??? and we set a course and steamed for the P.I.

One more time down memory lane, tho the IKE CVN69 was my 1st ship when I got my orders to the CORAMARU in 84 out of Chase Field, I was totally dissappointed, especially when I got to the Portsmouth drydock to check in and saw that rusty nasty dusty smelly ol' bucket o rust I was like Holy S..., what did my detailer just do to me, but when I was checking out to go to Iceland after the ship, I almost couldnt leave, that Ol Girl just grew on me, I had a the best time, and the best evals I ever had not to mention some of the most memorable experiences I would ever live thru, I still miss that ship, and sometimes wish that I had taken lots more pictures than I did, but life goes on. Wish everyone a good year and encourage all to continue making history for the AGELESS WARRIOR and bring honor to her and her crew thru her service life

Web cruising and found your site. Found a few shipmates from the time I was aboard. ABCS John Dills and AZCM Danny Whitehead plus Chaplain Halley. My nickname while in Ships Maint. was "Ed Norton". That's because the XO, Capt Denny McGinn put me in charge of the ships sewage system. Yep, thats right, an airdale in charge. Must have been what they needed because soon after I took over all the heads worked and I had the best ever division. They were all special in my wheel book. Retired now, living on the family farm where I grew up. I preach once in awhile and drive/maintain school busses. Will soon retire from that, then spend time at the pier watching my grand kids grow into fine young Americans. Ya'll write now and God Bless. Al Murray

I WAS A PROUD NAVY MAN AND ENJOYED SERVING MY COUNTRY WITH PRIDE. I CONSIDERED IT AN HONOR BESTOWED UPON ME TO SERVE AND PROTECT MY FELLOW AMERICAN AND DID IT WITH GREAT PRIDE!! IT WAS A LEARNING AND GROWING EXPERIENCE THAT I FEEL EVERY AMERICAN SHOULD HAVE. I LEARNED TO GROW AND SHARE IN MANY CULTURES WHICH ENRICHED MY LIFE DRAMATICALLY. I ONLY WISH I HAD STAYED IN LONGER. I HAD MANY GREAT FRIENDS AND STILL TELL PLENTY OF GREAT STORIES WHICH I WILL SHARE WITH MY CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN (WELL, MOST OF THE STORIES...IF YOU FELLOW SAILORS KNOW WHAT I MEAN;>) FRANK KOSA U.S.N. 82-85
