I was aboard the USS Coral Sea from 1962 to 1966. I was a Gunners Mate and operated the ship's armory. Chief John Troutman was my supervisor. I really enjoyed my time aboard the USS Coral Sea, especially the time we went to Australia. I also became a Golden Shellback. I'm now in Law Enforcement and have been with the Carthage Police Department for 33 years. My work is with abused and neglected children. Hope to retire soon .

Hello. I am looking for shipmates of my father, Larry R. Goodson, in hopes of giving him contacts as a Christmas gift. We took a trip to DC together earlier this year and being at the Navy memorial brought back many memories for him. He served in Aviation Ordinance from 68-71. If you served aboard the Coral Sea together I would love to pass on your comments and e-mail addresses to him as a gift. Thank you and Happy Holidays to all.

For former crew members information, there is now a Sea Cadet Division named after the USS Coral Sea. The Coral Sea Division is located in Pomona, California and currently has 9 Officers, 13 male Cadets and 7 female Cadets assigned to it. The Coral Sea Division will officially come into existence effective 01 December 2006. The Unit guidon is currently being made and a 4; X 6' Color Guard Flag is being looked at. Coral Sea Association President Bill Johnson and several Staff Officers have been considering an NSCC Unit named after the Coral Sea for a couple of years now and, with the assistance of a former crewmember in the NSCC, was able to accomplish the task. About Mid December, the Unit web page can probably located on the internet simply by typing in: Sea Cadets - Pomona Valley When the links come up go to Google Directory-Regional>North America>United States and then click on U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps - Coral Sea Division or Ingraham Division (Former name of the Division).

Stopped in and caught up on the latest Guest book entries. I sometime wonder if I’m insane. Right here, next to the computer. I have all three of my cruse books. When I go through this guest book, I open my cruse book and match names to faces. I hope those young men and women now serving take home the same life long connection. Sane or not, when I do this, match names to faces, I feel content. I am reminded of good times, good friends, and a job done well. If I don’t see you before… Merry xmas to all…

My heart was broken the day I learned they tore her down. Never will there be another like her. The ports I saw and the things we did are the folder of the best sea stories. Who could ever forget thier first visit to Subic? lol Or thier journey from polly-wog to shellback? Although I was never an "model" sailor, I am proud to have served upon her. Long live her memory.

October 12, 2006 I was on board for the '68-'69 WestPac cruise. So many familiar names. Mike Golub, NYC, Don Logan, Butch Hartsock, Rick Tarr, Ontario, CA, John Spadafora from Philly, Cleary, Henly, Sharpton from Talapoosa, GA, Ron Sellers. I've forgotten a few names in 37 years. All night poker games, quarter a point. Rick Tarr and I left the ship to go to A school when we got back in '69. Four months at Treasure Island as an RD3 was great duty. I ended up on a destroyer escort out of Newport after that. Rick went back to the Coral Maru and we lost touch. Sometimes on late night TV Too Late the Hero will come on. A lot of us worked as extras when they were filming some scenes in the Philippines. I remember someone smoking in one of the huts they'd built for the movie. Just about burned the set down. Hi to all of you guys.

Served onboard the Ageless Warrior with pride and professionalism. A true beautiful piece of machinery. Miss the sea. Live close to Baltimore where they sent her the final resting place. It appears that I'm not the only one who remembers only some of the best times that I ever had, unless I force myself to recall how truly long and miserable some of those days were in the Gulf of Tonkin and elsewhere. Hunter's Point was terrible, and I think it took years to undo the butchering of what work was done there. It's sad that the old boat met such an undignified and demeaning end.

Joined the ship in Sasebo, right before Christmas. Remember moving to off Okinawa for New years and continued to stay on board for the next two years. I was standing on the starboard side of the bridge when I heard the saw the #3 elevator falling off. We were in the south China Sea. One time, the ship was turning and they were moving planes, one of the AD's and tractors flpped off the Port #2 elevator. I also remember the bad crash one night as the planes were re-fueling. Someone made a bad landing and continued up the deck, taking out one plane after another. Being on the bridge all the time, I had the oppurtunity to log alot what was happening to the old lady. It would be interesting to read alot of those old logs. Few years back finally parted with my 33 1/3 crusie book record, it was too warped. I was also lucky, used to fly home on the COD as I went to high school in Coronado with the XO's daughter, I knew the Navigator and most of the officers before I went aboard. One job I had on board was to assist winding all the ships clock in every space on board. It gave me the oppurtunity to be in or see just about every space on the ship. When I wasn't working, I liked to spend my spare time up in secondary Conn. Always quite and peaceful. Even screwed up once and made it to Captains Mast. A bunch of us got caught on the beach where we weren't supposed to be. Was restricted to the ship for one port call at Youkuska. Left the ship when she was in San Francisco 1963. Returned to San Diego, married a Captains daughter, went back to school and into the Coast Guard. Still have alot of fond memories though. Would be interesting to know how many of my other QM's are still around.

I wasn't attached to the Coral Sea, but I had a few friends on board. I was on the U.S.S. Ranger, CVA-61, GM Division. I'm looking for the "Chicken Hawk". I think he was in G Division on the Coral Sea. We were in transit together at N.A.S. Alameda around 1969. "have nose will hunt".

It sure is good to see that there are still many of us shipmates left to check in and make note. I have been trading sea stories with my son who is a officer in the gator boat navy. It's not the same. I think we had more fun. Although his pays is better. I hope we all have many more years to pass on the experiences and friendships that we all had. God Bless.

Interesting website, but I feel that I should point out a couple of omissions. The Air Wing listings for the final two cruises are in error. CVW-13 was the final example of the notational airwing and contained not one, but two A-6E Intruder squadrons: The Fighting Tigers of ATKRON 65 and The Warhorses of ATKRON 55. I can verify this as I was the 'Petty Officer In Charge' of SEAOPDET 25, the SEAOPDET detachment from NAS Oceana, in support of the Intruder squadrons. The second omission? I'll have to check the cruisebooks, but wasn't there an IM-4 division?

I remember the 111's mishaps, helo accident, the loss of arresting gear, and numerous other mishaps, and the loss of my fellow shipmates. I enjoyed my stay onboard and both MED CRUISES. Still trying to learn how the Navy handled an incident involving a kid named "Puckett" who jumped ship on the way from Pearl to Sydney on the 1963 WESTPAC cruise. I believe Puckett was from VAH-2 - he got sent to 10 days "correctional custody" while we were at sea, got away from the MAA when he was being taken to get his gear to go to the brig and was never seen/heard from again. Lots of brass and congressmen when we got back to Alameda in the fall. How do you list him in the ship's log? AWOL? MIA? KIA?

I just found this site, and it fills me with joy to know that there are so many shipmates that remember and cherish their time aboard the Corrie Maru, as we used to say. Although we were in the thick of it, there were some glorious days, working with one of the best flight deck crews in the navy. I was flight deck bos'n, Lt. Barnicle was flight deck officer, Lt. Welford was assistant, LPO was ABH1 Fuller...and V-2 division had some great guys who kept the cats and gear operating at capacity with Lcdr. Williams, WO1 Tom Gregory, Lt. Kall, Chief Gregory...Air boss was Cdr. Fraasa and the assistant was Lcdr. Don Swank, And we all served proudly under the command of Captain James Ferris who earned his star in '69 while we were operating off the Vietnamese coast. I have so many wonderful memories of those days and would love to hear from any shipmates who served during those tense times. We operated so many days and nights in a row that we lost track of time! I'm surprised that there are not more comments from those of us who served in the V-1 divisin back in those days. I hope all are doing well and I hope to be at the next reunion in 2006.

Someone in an earlier post asked if anyone remebered being extras in the movie, "Too Late The Hero". Yes, I was an extra an long with some other friends. They came to the ship while we were in PI and hired extras. The movie, a WWII flick starring Michael Caine and Cliff Robertson, was being filmed near Olongapo. We played British soldiers. I've seen the movie several times and have pointed out to friends and relatives my face in the scene where we are encouraging the hero as he runs towards the compound with Japanese machine guns firng at him. Only a fair movie but a great experieince. Free beer and food as I recall. Anyone else remember this? 69? 70?

Hello to all Maru members. I went aboard the Coral Sea in PI because she was extended after covering for the F.D.R. when she caught fire. The "O" caught fire the next cruise, the same one where we were in Yokosuka, Japan drydock. We thought we would be there longer, but the Japanese workers replaced a bent shaft & all four screws in 10 days. I remember being asleep when we hit something. BOY! What a racket, and the ship bucked like a wild horse. There are many more memories, good & bad, funny & sad. But I wouldn't trade anything for them. REMEMBER THE OLD CORAL MARU! She lives in all our memories. Hello, to Gordon, Payton, Bowhay, Loehr, Leightner, and all the rest in V6 Cal Lab.

Charlie was my best friend,i served on the BB-62 in the same time frame as he did. I hate to report that we lost him in 1980. If you were lucky enough to get to know him you already knew what a special guy he was. In our home town they wrote a book about him ,it was called MY PAL GRUBBY, . He got married and had three daughters. If anyone out there remembers him i would like to hear from you.

Took the time to visit the USS Midway , while I was in San Diego, and it was great being on board it remained me of the years I spend on the hanger bay during the four years I was on the Coral Sea, it again remained me how horrible it was to know that no one cared enough to save the Coral Sea, and on the same week I saw the TV video of us sinking another carrier to become a reef. I guess that no one cares about saving these fine sailing ladies, and if it was not for people like us, the Coral Sea would only be a distance memory Let keep her memory alive.

I keep hearing from Jim Johnson and Bobby D. Taylor about the reuniouns. This year I will be able to attend in San Diego. Looking forward to the visit. Hope to see both Bobby and Jim as well as others such as Ron Knight. The 3 1/2 years I spent aboard were great. The longer ago they are, the better they were. Seriously, I had a good time and learned a lot. Hope to see you all in San Diego.

The older I get, the more I think about the Coral Sea and my time aboard her. We went on two WESTPAC cruises and operated off Vietnam before the Gulf of Tonkin resolution. I had a lot of friends on board. I would like to locate then Chief Lawrence Libby. He was given a limited duty officer commission, and he came to visit me in Delray Beach, Florida after I got out. He headed to Anartica for two years duty, and I lost contact with him. He was a great leader, in my opinion and a good friend.

Attended the Midwest Fling in Fort Wayne, IN and it was a fantastic time. What a great group of people that came in town for a outstanding weekend of fun. We had shipmates from 1947 thru 1980's that attended this reunion. You would not know that there was a gap in the years aboard, as everybody at the reunion welcomed newer shipmates with open arms!! Anyone who can attend this reunion, should! If you miss future reunions, you are going to miss out.. My personal thanks to Herman, and CPO Mackey, for their efforts to put this weekend together for all of us. Hope to see all those that attended Fort Wayne, in San Diego in October. I also hope that any Coral Sea shipmate, that have yet to attend a reunion to attend. If you are not yet a member of the association, please join Us.. Best to all my shipmates!

In the early 60's, I was a kid waiting for my life to "turn out." Now I often look back on how much I took my adventures with the Coral Sea and her crew for granted. I had no understanding of what it means to sail on a warship and to tend to its needs. If I touched her aging hull now, as both man and boy, would I, could I, explore the seas again?

JUST LEFT A MESSAGE AFTER ALL THESE YEARS AND HAD AN OPPORTUNIY TO READ SOME OTHER COMMENTS FROM OTHER SHIPMATES ABOUT THE FATE OF THIS OLD WARRIOR. STRANGELY ENOUGH, THE CONTRACTOR FROM THE INDIAN COMPANY WHO SALVAGED THE CORAL MARU HAD DINNER AT MY HOUSE 4 YEARS AGO. WHEN ONE THINKS ABOUT THE FACT THAT I LIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS LAND OF OURS IT IS RATHER ASTOUNDING TO THINK THAT THE GUY WHO CUT UP OUR BOAT FOR 15 MILES OF COPPER WIRING ACTUALLY WAS IN A DINNER GUEST AND COMMENTED ON THE BEAUTY OF THE SHIP. IT IS HIS CLAIM THAT IT TOOK 6 MONTHS TO TOW THE BOAT TO THE WEST COAST OF INDIA, AND HE ADDED THAT THEY MADE A FORTUNE ON THE COPPER. PERSONNALY I DON'T HAVE ANY GREAT LOVE FOR THAT OLD BOAT, BUT IT WAS A GOOD HOME FOR THE FOUR YEARS I SERVED ON IT AND ALIKE MANY OF US WHO SPENT TIME WITH "SAN FRANCISCO'S OWN", I AM SOMEWHAT SURPRISED THAT A WEST COAST CITY DID NOT EXTEND AND OFFER TO ADOPT THAT BOAT. IS IT STRANGE THAT THE USS MIDWAY IS A MUSEUM PIECE; WAS SHE IN DRYDOCK DURING THE HEIGHT OF THE WAR. I GUESS SHE WAS NAMED AFTER A MORE IMPORTANT BATTLE. SHIT HAPPENS!!. ANYONE SERVE WITH CAPTAIN JAMES FERRIS? HE WAS A PIECE OF WORK!!!

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER JOHN HAMILTON MCQM--WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THIS WONDERFULL GUY IS STILL AMOUNG THE LIVING. I REMEMBER HIM AS THE MOST PROFESSIONAL, CARING, AND IF I CAN SAY THIS WAY ONE OF THE MOST LOVNING INDIVIDUALS I HAVE EVER HAD THE PRIVLEGE OF MEETING. AFTER YEARS IN THE AMERICAN CORPORATE WORLD, I AM CONFIDENT THAT I CAN SAY WITHOUT EQUIVOCATION THAT THE FINEST MANAGER OF MEN I EVER MET WAS THIS "OLD SALT" THAT WAS AS MUCH A "FATHER FIGURE" AS ANYONE INDIVIDUAL I'VE EVER KNOWN. THE LAST TIME I SHOOK HIS HAMD WAS JULY 3rd, 1970--I WILL NEVER FORGET THE TEARS WE BOTH SHED. HE WAS A FRIEND TO HIS TROOPS AND A CONFIFENT TO HIS SUPERIORS.

Decided to submit, again, (now Mar 2006).. since it has been great to read so very many favorable comments, of the memories of times spent on her. It sure underlines just how attached a sailor becomes, to his ship.. in reality, his home away from home.. and the still-proud service to his country, as well. Hope all who read these entries still feel the bonds that developed, even now.. DECADES later. I've heard only from one shipmate, a fellow Quartermaster, John Olson, who stumbled upon my original post.. is nice to reacquaint, after so many years.

More than 50 years have gone by but I can recall some of the occurances during the 13 months I was part of ship's company on Coral Sea. I was short two months of graduation from the Univ of Michigan where I enrolled after WW2 on the GI Bill. It was around Mid-December 1950 when I received notice of recall to active duty. I asked for and received an extension until Feb. of 1951 in order to receive my engineering degree. At the time, my wife was expecting our first child in April so it was with great reluctance that I reported for duty. A daughter was born on April 25, 1951 while we were on station in the Med. Over my life I have managed to be blessed with two daughters, three grand-daughters, one great-grand-daughter and four great-grandsons. For my wife Ginny and me, they are the joys of our life. As I look back, I would not want to have missed the oportunity to serve on such a noteable carrier. Over the years, she earned a place in Naval history not rivaled by many. I had been a Specialist M (mailman) later during WW2 and there was no requirement for MaM3c to type. In the late 40's, the enlisted man rate designation was changed to Teleman with reserve designations for cryptographer, teletype operator, communications yeoman and mailman, all of which required typing skill. My new rate was TEM3c. I was initially assigned to the traffic center in the island structure as a typist. That did not last long since my inability to type had me "banished" to the post office by Lt. Cdr. Hodell as "untrainable". I wanted to go below decks to the engine rooms where some of my engineering learning might be of use. It seemed that would have required an act of congress..... so the post office it was to be!!! But those were fun days. The post office gang was often given preferential status. It was as though the crew believed we were responsible for the treasured letters from home. No standing on line for us!!!! And I would like to have a penny for every dollar sent home by the officers and crew on payday. It was on those days I got writers cramp from writing so many money orders. While I have lost track of most all of my shipmates, the Coral Sea has been part of my computer life for some time. I use various combos of her designation, name, carrier division and radio call designation in passwords and/or user names. My Chevy truck license tag in New Jersey is "NIJA" which were the radio call letters of Coral Sea. Since I was part of the O-2R div., I spent a lot of time in the three radio shacks and signal bridge so I saw and heard much of the activity on board. But it all was so long ago and are now but distant memories. Can anyone refresh them for me??? Since much time has passed, I don't expect too many old shipmates will respond to these comments. Let me just say that I share with all of you the pride of serving aboard the "Ageless Warrior" In my time, we called CV43 the "natural" along with one other carrier in the division, the USS Oriskany, CV34. Anybody out there remember the post office crew???

Hello CVA-43 Assoc., I am a Navy destroyerman veteran that served from 1968-1972.I was a crew member aboard the Henley (DD 762),WAldron (DD 699),Norris (DD 859) and Charles P. Cecil (DD 835).Today (March 9,'05),my daughter found a round brass or bronze plaque depicting the USS Coral Sea,a head on view of the bow of the ship with a fighter plane lifting off the flight deck. With the words Coral Sea below the bow and the designation CV-43 above the flight deck.In the middle of the back is what is left of a pin that was sheared off. This pin was probably part of a device to hold the round brass piece onto a wooden plaque. It was found on a street in Rockville,CT.I would like to return it to its owner,if not possible, then I would like to give it to the Coral Sea Association. Please advise. Pleasant day.

Would like to say God Bless all of you that served and would also like to share a story about two sailors someone may remember. My father, Thomas H. Pringle spent a great deal of time on the Coral Sea, out of Alameda, CA. We lived in Corpus Christi, TX when my father received orders for Whidbey Island for one year in late 1977 or early 1978. During that time a heart murmur was detected. He had two open heart surgeries at Lackland AFB, San Antonio and was forced into retirement after 21+ years of Naval service. Upon "retirement," he took a position as chief of maintenance at a Robstown, TX hospital. He, at the age of 39, tragically drown in Lake Mathis, TX (now Lake Corpus Christi) along with a co-worker, age 29, when a "Norther" blew through on January 6, 1979. I was 16 at the time and took it very hard.

I eventually returned to our hometown of Willow Springs, MO and the years passed. My wife and I bought a small cafe (bought a job) while we worked our way through college. One day when the lunch rush was over, she went to the dining room for a glass of tea. There she struck up a conversation with a gentleman that introduced himself - Martin Young. My wife stated that her maiden name was Young but it was now Pringle. Mr. Young said, "Pringle, I was in the Navy with a guy named Pringle - Tom Pringle." My wife said, "that is my husbands name, I bet you knew his father." Mr. Young stated that he knew Tom Pringle, that the last time he had seen him was in Da Nang in '68. My wife informed him of my father's death. Mr. & Mrs. Young and I met a couple of days later at the cafe where Mr. Young spoke of my father's professionalism, leadership qualities, and integrity (Coral Sea's Sailor of the Month July or August 1970 & finalist for PacFleet Sailor of the Year).

Mr. Young said that my father often spoke of the Ozarks and the work ethic of the salt-of-the-earth type people that inhabited the hills and hollows here while he was growing up on a rural Texas County farm. Mr. Young went on to say that he made a mental note to visit the Ozarks upon his retirement. When he and his wife passed through they fell in love with the place and settled here in Willow Springs,MO, my father's hometown. You know, I can look from my front porch across the street and see the backside of Mr. Martin Young's home on the next street - two sailors proudly serving their country a half-a-world away in 1968 and one ends up moving across the street from the son of his fellow sailor. Small world.

I hope I have not offended anyone by taking up this hallowed space but I felt compelled to share this after reading of the mighty Coral Sea, a portrait of which still hangs in my home, taken returning to Alameda as she steamed beneath the Golden Gate Bridge and into San Francisco Bay.

I regret that I never got a chance to walk the deck that all of you and my father walked, and felt the souls of those that came before. As I grow older my respect grows for what each of you and your families sacrificed for this country and our way of life. God Bless you all.

If anyone knew Thomas H. Pringle and cares to drop a line, I would very much enjoy your e-mail. I would also be more than happy to give any message to Martin Young. Best Wishes, Tom Pringle Charles T. (Tom) Pringle son of Thomas H.

Served two WESTPAC Cruises to Viet Nam on the Coral Sea.
Was the LPO in W Division where we were responsible for the building of DSTs and 346 Mines, even though conventional ordnance was not our thing, as we were responsible for the Nucs that the Navy should happen to need.

Young, full of vigor and vitality, we considered ourselves immortal. Now we find ourselves older than our parents were then...that is for some of us. I wonder just how many of us are still around? It`s nice to reflect on those wonderful years, when we didn`t have a care in the world. Those were the "golden years", not the ones we live in now. Wouldn`t it be nice to be able to do a time travel back and know what we know now? I wonder if we would do things differently? Ponder.

I've enjoyed reading comments here after stumbling on your site while looking for something else. Family friend, Eddie Lewis, now deceased, was, I believe, on Coral Sea. He retired as CPO before Viet Nam and lived in San Francisco, but was in and out of Bremerton more than once and aboard more than one ship. Short, rather round, always smoking large cigar. Does anyone have a memory to share about him? I'm curious, too. Did Mr Noble ever find Pucket(t) AND is he related to Pat Noble of Plumas County? Thank you all.

I have tried many of these guestbook addresses, only to find they are not available. One case in particular was a Rebecca Flores, from Dumas Texas, asking about her grandfather, who served aboard during the early 60's, who had contacted medical problems from Benzine. I too have this malady. I even attempted to locate her through the white pages. A dead end. If you are out there, Rebecca, please contact me. Another was a Chuck Rose from Huntington Beach, Cal. Either they have discontinued their internet, or their e-mail addresses were incorrect. Anyone out there who served aboard during my years who was a plane pusher or a tin bender? It is with sadness that I report the passing of EMC Michael Farantino, USNR (ret.). Mike was in E Division on the commissioning crew and a plankowner on the Coral Sea. Although not a member of the association, he always fondly recalled his time on board. To those of us who kenw him, he will be missed.

We were in route to Perth Australia on my 21st birthday when we received new orders to go to the Mauighuas situation.. Boy was I heart broken I was anticipating parting for my 21st birthday..We finaly recovered the first asault we relized this was a real deal. We then leveled the island and I realizd this was big time stuff. I look forward to hearing from all of my old bud to talk over old times. To all that served on the Coral Sea, aloha...

Don't get to this site often, but when I do, I love reading the messages from the crew of the Coral Maru. To answer a question about the date when our ship crossed the equator and the international dateline in 1963 on our way to Sydney, Australia. It was on April,22. Latitude 00-00, Longitude 180.00. I still have my "Golden Shellback" card. You all have a Happy New Year.

I was the Plane Captain of the plane that went overboard (VF- 151 number 102). Like it was yesterday I remember strapping in the Commanding Officer (the pilot) and the Executive Officer (the RIO) for their last flight home from combat to meet their families. If I recall our executive officer was going home to retire out of the NAVY. Tragically he died in this mishap. I can still vividly see the nose landing gear collapse on the cat and the plane go over the side. The CO went into the water but the XO hit a plane taxing up from behind, bounced off of it and went into the ocean. He was the one who died.
