I had the Sparrow Missile Room and enjoyed the Air Conditioning. I live in Albuquerque, NM with my third wife Galina Kukleva from Siberia near Novasibrisk Russia. I worked 33 years for Department of Defense Inspector General and other Federal Agencies, retired year 2000, as a GS 511/6. I miss the good old days working on the AN/ARC27/55. |

I was the last Ships Bosun and stayed on as the Hull Division Officer after Decommissioning for the layup process. My wife Sharon was one of the ombudsman. I relieved a Warrant officer Smith so please don't get us confused. He didn't have a very good reputation as I recall. I hope to be able to attend the reunion in Norfolk and meet all you guys. Well I was at my cardiologist the other day, I had my vietnam hat on, he said he new nothihng about the tonkin gulf or the war, except his high school history teachers said we were wrong fighting there. I wonder if that teacher was one on the draft dodgers who skated out by going to college for a teaching degree. It never stops. But I have a loving family and I have shipmates. Comments: All hands, please stay quarantined. I understand not working is incredibly tard, especially if you have kids and mortgages. But being ill or dead ain't very helpful. There is NO medical evidence that person who have had covid can't get it again, so don't assume you are "safe" from the bug. For those who assume this is some goverment conspiricy, to what end? How does the government or business benefit from a quarantine, or the death of citizens. Before you break quarantine please check ALL available information resources, not just the sources you usually use, but every souce you can then rethink. Some time rethinking may save lives, yours, your family and friends.

Comments: Started out as Yoeman in B Division office then moved to 3 Baker Fireroom and then over to 3 Able Fireroom. After making BT2 I was put in charge of 3 Able Fireroom until my enlistment was up. Enjoyed my time in the firerooms and had a great crew to work with. The entire B Division was full of great people, 220 men strong as I recall. I bunked in the aft living compartment under the rear starboard aircraft elevator. Was able to sail to Sydney, Australia with ship before discharge. |

We had a wild time for those 8 months, I hope all is well with everyone as I have reached the age of 62. All of you were great to work with & our officers were the best. All the nicknames Lt. Hefkin gave us (Peter) was mine. I just stumbled across this webpage and thought I give it a try.
I served 28 1/2 years on the East Cleveland Fire Dept. & retired as a Deputy Chief in 2010.
I teach at the Tri-C fire academy and have been since 1998.

Comments: In 10 days it will be the 36th year anniversary of my last walk off this ship. It was in dry dock then in Norfolk. It had been about 6 months after arriving to our new home following the World Cruise. I remember vividly the first time i saw her tied up to a pier at NAS Alameda. My thought then and many times after that day was simply, Wow... God bless all who served with me, before me and after me on this once fine ship. |
